In the summary of responses to voters' petitions before the year-end meeting of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports responded to a number of proposals related to street renaming.
Specifically, Mr. Le Van Thanh, Head of the Front Work Committee of Ward 7, Cau Kieu Ward, proposed to review, compare and handle cases of duplicate street names between wards after implementing the two-level local government model. Meanwhile, people in Binh Tri Dong Ward proposed to change the names of Ma Lo Street and Chien Luoc Street.
Regarding this issue, the Department of Culture and Sports said that after merging the two provinces, the department sent a document requesting the People's Committees of 168 wards, communes, and special zones to strengthen state management of naming and renaming streets and public works in the area.

Next, the Department of Culture and Sports requested wards, communes, and special zones to review roads with the same name and number in the same ward, commune, or special zone and send them to the Department of Culture and Sports for synthesis and reporting to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee.
On that basis, the Department of Culture and Sports will coordinate with wards, communes and special zones to name unnamed roads, or rename roads with the same name or number in the same ward, commune or special zone to create favorable conditions for people in administrative, commercial and service transactions.
Is it necessary to change the name of Ma Lo and Chien Luoc streets?
Regarding the proposal to rename Ma Lo Street and Chien Luoc Street, the Department of Culture and Sports also explained the history, origin and solution.
Specifically, Ma Lo Street was formerly a trail in the village, people used to call it Ma Lo Street, and over time it became official. The place name Ma Lo has existed for a long time, because there is a cemetery here with graves built in the shape of a cooking stove. The word "ma lo" was mispronounced and written as "ma lo", people used to call it Ma Lo.

Similarly, Chien Luoc Road existed before 1975, was a dirt road along the moat around the strategic hamlet so the people called it Chien Luoc Road. Until now, the road still has its old name.
Regarding the handling plan, the Department of Culture and Sports of Ho Chi Minh City cited Article 5 of Decree 91/2005 of the Government , which stipulates that the names of roads, streets and public works that have familiar names, are closely associated with the history and culture of the nation and locality, and have been deeply ingrained in the subconscious and feelings of the people for many generations will not be changed.
In cases where a road, street or public building has been named but is deemed to have no historical or cultural significance, is not in accordance with the nation's customs and traditions, is not a representative figure of the country or locality, or has a negative influence or impact on society, the name must be changed, but careful consideration is required.
Based on the above regulations, the Department of Culture and Sports will forward the voters' petition to the People's Committee of Binh Tri Dong Ward for consideration. In case of renaming, the Department of Culture and Sports will advise the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City to consider and submit to the People's Council of Ho Chi Minh City for decision.
