Ho Chi Minh City has collected nearly 5 billion VND from renting out part of the sidewalk, of which the Department of Transport collected about 1.5 billion VND, and the districts collected about 3.2 billion VND.
On October 17, sharing about the collection of fees for renting a part of the sidewalk in Ho Chi Minh City in the past time, Mr. Hoang Phuc Dung, Deputy Head of the Department of Road Traffic Infrastructure Management and Exploitation, Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport said that up to now, four districts in the city have collected sidewalk fees.

Four districts rent sidewalks including District 1, District 3, District 10, District 12 with total collected fees of 4,799 billion VND.
Of which, the Department of Transport collects fees for cultural activities, arranges public transport facilities such as bicycle stations... with about 1.5 billion VND; districts operating business services, buying and selling goods, transferring materials, construction waste, and cultural activities on the sidewalks with about 3.2 billion VND.
Mr. Dung assessed that the implementation of sidewalk fee collection has created consensus from the people, a stable mentality when temporarily using a part of the roadway and sidewalk in accordance with regulations; contributing to ensuring traffic order and safety, urban beauty and environmental sanitation.
From there, gradually impact, adjust awareness, form positive habits and behaviors of many organizations and individuals related to the use of roads and sidewalks.
Through the pilot process, the units are coordinating, reviewing, and identifying obstacles and difficulties in managing and collecting fees for temporary use of part of the roadway and sidewalk to propose solutions suitable to the actual situation.
However, the implementation process also encountered many difficulties and problems regarding the current status of roads, sidewalks, people's psychology and habits, management units, and implementation organization...
In addition, a significant number of people still maintain the mentality and habit of considering the sidewalks and roads in front of their houses as under their own management and decision; some management units are still slow in implementing toll collection and management of the streets and sidewalks.
"The current state of road and sidewalk width still has many shortcomings: narrow width, many existing structures, maintenance work has not been given attention and handled promptly, and funding for sidewalk maintenance is limited," said Mr. Dung.
