People proactively shop early.
With only a few days left until the Lunar New Year of the Horse 2026, the market for goods, especially confectionery and Tet gift baskets, in Ho Chi Minh City is entering its busiest period of the year.
Observations at major supermarket chains indicate abundant supply, stable prices, diverse product ranges, and a continued consumer trend favoring high-quality Vietnamese goods.

According to reporters from the Industry and Trade Newspaper, the number of customers flocking to supermarkets increased sharply in the evenings and on weekends. Many families took advantage of shopping early to avoid the crowds closer to Tet (Lunar New Year). Sweets, jams, nuts, tea, coffee, soft drinks, and gift baskets were among the most sought-after items.
Ms. Nguyen Hong Tham (Rach Dua Ward, Ho Chi Minh City) said that because she hasn't had time off work yet, her family has to rush to do their Tet shopping in the evenings after work. These days, supermarkets are quite crowded, but she still tries to arrange her time to gradually prepare the necessary supplies for her family. For now, she prioritizes buying dry food, confectionery, and some items used during Tet to avoid price increases or shortages closer to the peak shopping season.

Similarly, Mr. Nguyen Van Nhang (Vung Tau ward, Ho Chi Minh City) also took advantage of his time after work to go to the supermarket to choose suitable Tet gift baskets to give to his family on both sides and colleagues.
"This year's Tet gift market is quite diverse, focusing on practicality. Gift baskets are designed with essential items such as cooking oil, MSG, seasoning, soy sauce... mostly Vietnamese products, quite practical for daily use," Mr. Nhang shared.
Over 90% are Vietnamese products.
According to a representative from GO! Supermarket in Ba Ria (Ba Ria Ward, Ho Chi Minh City), this year the store has over 50 designs with approximately 1,900 gift baskets. In addition, there are 600 gift baskets from various suppliers, and notably, 100 GO! branded gift baskets have been positively received by consumers thanks to their diverse designs, reasonable prices, guaranteed quality, and the fact that most of the products are Vietnamese.
Among all the gift baskets that have been trusted and chosen by customers, the most popular price range is from 100,000 to 600,000 VND, suitable for gifting to relatives, friends, and business partners.

According to Mr. Tran Cong Hieu, Director of Co.opmart Vung Tau Supermarket (Vung Tau Ward, Ho Chi Minh City), this year the company's Tet gift basket designs focus on customers from the Fatherland Front of wards and communes who purchase them for social work, with prices of 500,000 VND or less. In the current difficult economic climate, this price range for gift baskets will be suitable for the average person's budget.
This year, the supermarket is expected to sell around 5,000 gift baskets. In the coming days, gift baskets priced at around 2,000,000 VND/basket will be popular with customers, suitable for gifting purposes.
"Today's consumers are very concerned about both price and quality of goods, so we designed gift baskets with over 90% Vietnamese products to reassure consumers about quality and to promote the habit of choosing domestic products and prioritizing the use of Vietnamese goods," Mr. Hieu added.
Representatives from supermarkets also stated that the number of shoppers will increase significantly in the coming days. They predict that the number of customers will double compared to normal days. Therefore, supermarkets have planned and increased their supply of goods, including both dry goods and fresh produce.
According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Industry and Trade, as the peak Tet shopping season approaches, purchasing power at supermarkets is increasing sharply. Items under the market stabilization program currently account for 20-50% of the market share, depending on the product category. Modern distribution systems are committed to maintaining stable prices throughout the period before, during, and after Tet.
