On the evening of December 8, Binh Duong General Hospital (Ho Chi Minh City) announced that doctors had successfully performed a cesarean section (also known as a cesarean section or caesarean section) for a pregnant woman who had undergone a temporary hand transplant while pregnant with twins.

Doctors welcomed two healthy baby boys into the world.

Doctor Pham Thi Thu Trang, Head of the Obstetrics Department of Binh Duong General Hospital, said that on the night of December 7, the pregnant woman showed signs of premature labor. After monitoring, the doctor determined that the pregnant woman could not give birth naturally and consulted with multiple departments before deciding to perform a cesarean section.

After about 30 minutes of surgery, two baby boys weighing 2,300g and 2,450g respectively were born, rosy, crying well and were transferred to the Neonatal Department for monitoring. The mother is currently stable and continues to be cared for in the Obstetrics Department.

According to the hospital, pregnant woman LNP (20 years old) was admitted to the hospital in September 2025 with her right hand completely severed due to a work accident, when she was 23 weeks pregnant.

Faced with the risk of infection and threatening the safety of the pregnancy if the hand was reattached immediately, the team of the Department of Trauma and Orthopedics led by Dr. Vo Thai Trung temporarily grafted the hand onto the right leg to preserve the tissue, waiting for the right time to reattach it.

At 34 weeks of pregnancy, the team continued the surgery for more than 12 hours to separate the hand from the temporary position and reattach it to the correct anatomical position, using many complex microsurgical techniques to restore circulation and graft lost tendons and nerves. During the surgery, the heartbeats of the two fetuses were continuously monitored to ensure safety.

Doctors said that nearly two weeks after the hand transplant on November 17, the mother's health has improved, and her fingers have been able to move slightly during physical therapy.

Before the surgery, the hospital held an interdisciplinary consultation and online consultation with experts from the Orthopedic and Trauma Hospital and Tu Du Hospital to ensure maximum safety for the mother and two fetuses.

Ho Chi Minh City health sector leaders assessed the successful hand transplant for a pregnant woman carrying twins as a remarkable professional step forward at a provincial hospital, with humanitarian significance in helping the mother retain her ability to work and care for her children after giving birth.

According to medical literature, the technique of temporarily transplanting limbs to other parts of the body has been applied in China. Binh Duong General Hospital has previously performed temporary transplants of severed lower legs before reattaching them, helping patients regain the ability to walk./.
