On June 1, Children's Hospital 1 announced that it had just recorded the death of patient NHD (5 years old, residing in Long An province) due to suspected hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD).
Previously, at 8:30 a.m. on May 31, the child was admitted to the hospital with lip sores, poor appetite, and vomiting once. On the evening of the fourth day of illness, the child had a fever of 39 degrees Celsius with 10 minutes of body tremors, could not speak, and was sweating. He was admitted to Tien Giang General Hospital, diagnosed with stage 3 TCM, intubated, given a balloon pump, used vasopressors, sedatives, and transferred to Children's Hospital 1.
At Children's Hospital 1, the patient was in a deep coma, had convulsions, had a rapid and weak pulse, and a very high fever of 41.2 degrees Celsius. The diagnosis upon admission was stage 4 HFMD. The patient was actively treated for shock, respiratory and circulatory support, and blood filtration according to the Ministry of Health 's HFMD treatment guidelines. However, due to the patient's very serious condition, at 5:25 p.m. on May 31, the patient died. The cause of death was diagnosed with HFMD and the hospital is waiting for PCR test results to determine.

According to statistics from Children's Hospital 1, in the first 5 months of 2023, the hospital received 1,349 outpatients and 158 inpatients due to TCM. Currently, the number of severe patients has increased compared to the same period in 2022, with 5 severe cases (2 in Ho Chi Minh City and 3 in the provinces), including 1 death (in the province).
According to statistics from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, hand, foot and mouth disease is increasing with 157 cases this week, an increase of 47.1% compared to the average of the previous 4 weeks (107 cases). The cumulative number of cases since the beginning of the year is 1,670 cases.
