The Department of Transport has just sent the Office of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee a draft resolution of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council on policies to support users of public passenger transport services by bus and train, as well as financial support for public passenger transport activities in the city.

According to plan, Ho Chi Minh City will put metro line No. 1 (Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien) into commercial operation from the end of December.

Therefore, Ho Chi Minh City plans to use the budget of 32.6 billion VND/year to support 100% of ticket prices for a number of policy beneficiaries such as people with revolutionary contributions, people with disabilities, the elderly (60 years old and over) and children under 6 years old accompanied by adults.

In particular, in the first 30 days of operation, Ho Chi Minh City plans to spend the budget to support 100% of the ticket price for all passengers traveling by train and on 17 connecting bus routes. Of which, the cost of operating the train for people to experience Metro No. 1 is 15.7 billion VND, and the cost of traveling on 17 connecting bus routes is 17.3 billion VND.

In addition to free tickets, Ho Chi Minh City will also support funding for public passenger transport by bus and train; using the city budget to offset the difference between ticket revenue and operating costs.

It is expected that the total budget to support public passenger transport by bus and train will be 2,226 billion VND/year, of which 1,843 billion VND will be supported for buses and 383 billion VND for trains.

It is expected that the project will be submitted to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council in the meeting next December and will take effect from January 1, 2025.
