Following the heated debate over the penalty decision in the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid, the Atletico Madrid Supporters Association has officially criticized UEFA. The organization accused UEFA of “editing” the video explaining the decision after Julian Alvarez’s shot, and called for a rematch.

In its report, the Atletico Madrid Supporters Association argued that the video shown by UEFA on March 13 to explain the decision could have been “modified.” This raises the question of whether the team could sue UEFA and request a replay. However, under UEFA and FIFA regulations, this is unlikely.

Specifically, the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations stipulate in Article 9 that “the decisions of the referee on the field of play are final”. This means that the referee’s decisions, absent a serious error, cannot be overturned. Only in the case of a clear mistake, such as a mistake in the identity of the person being penalized, can the decision be reviewed.

In addition, Article 9 also specifies disciplinary measures to be taken in the event of a serious foul, even if the referee and his assistants did not see the incident. However, in this match, referee Marciniak saw the incident and even warned the VAR referee about the incident, making it even more difficult to request a replay.

Additionally, IFAB (International Laws of the Game) regulations state that a match cannot be abandoned due to a VAR error or a VAR-related decision. In this case, the VAR intervened and confirmed that the ball touched Alvarez twice, so there was no basis for a replay.

However, the Atletico Supporters Association's request still raises questions about the fairness in applying VAR technology and the transparency in refereeing decisions, which continue to be issues of concern to experts and fans in the international football community.
