Battle of Hiep Thanh - Phu Ngai Tri - Ba Co Temple: 70 years of heroic victory

Delegates attended the ceremony to offer flowers and commemorate at the victory stele of the battle of Hiep Thanh - Phu Ngai Tri - Ba Co Temple.

70 years ago, under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam , Battalion 309 together with the army and people of Chau Thanh achieved a resounding victory at the battle of Hiep Thanh - Phu Ngai Tri - Mieu Ba Co. That was a milestone in the history of national liberation, gaining independence and freedom.

In the joyful atmosphere of the first days of the new year, the Victory Anniversary Ceremony of Hiep Thanh - Phu Ngai Tri - Mieu Ba Co battle was solemnly and ceremoniously organized by the District Party Committee, People's Council, People's Committee, and Fatherland Front Committee of Chau Thanh district. The resounding victory of the past has gone down in history and is recalled with pride and deep gratitude.

Chairman of Chau Thanh District People's Committee - Nguyen Van Khai and delegates present at the ceremony reviewed the glorious feat and important significance of the victory of Hiep Thanh - Phu Ngai Tri - Mieu Ba Co in contributing to the collapse of the French Nava plan, contributing to the victory of the Dien Bien Phu campaign. The enemy's Battalion 502 and Company 14 were destroyed by Battalion 309 and the Vam Co local army after only nearly 1 hour. Our forces organized a loose interception, divided into 3 pincers to surround and destroy the enemy. The battle was extremely fierce, divided into 2 waves. At the end of the battle, we destroyed 145 enemies and captured 123 enemies, confiscating many guns and military equipment.

At the ceremony, veteran Colonel Le Phat Thanh, a living witness of that heroic battle, shared his sincere and emotional story. At that time, the colonel was only nineteen or twenty years old, fighting in the ranks of the local army of Vam Co. In addition to the information he knew about the battle situation and the achievements of the battle, the colonel also shared about the difficulties and hardships of our soldiers at that time. “At that time, ammunition and weapons were scarce, so our government had a policy of “using the enemy’s weapons to fight the enemy”, “each bullet is an enemy”, so every shot fired could not be wasted.

With a clever battle formation, we surrounded and destroyed the enemy while still preserving our forces. Without modern means of communication, the attacking forces and soldiers on the battlefield coordinated with each other through gunfire and trumpet sounds,” Colonel Le Phat Thanh shared. The Colonel’s stories help the next generation feel more clearly and deeply the value and significance of the victory of Hiep Thanh - Phu Ngai Tri - Mieu Ba Co at that time, when Vam Co district was still a temporarily occupied area with countless enemy posts and outposts.

Representing the young generation and youth force in the district, Chau Thanh District Youth Union Secretary - Nguyen Trung Ro affirmed that, continuing the heroic tradition, Chau Thanh youth will strive to study, cultivate morality, promote the tradition of drinking water and remembering its source, contributing to the successful implementation of the tasks assigned by the Party and the people, especially in the current 4.0 industrial revolution. Mr. Nguyen Trung Ro said, "Chau Thanh is a heroic land with a rich revolutionary tradition. I am very proud to be a son of Chau Thanh. We, the young generation, are always aware that the peaceful, free and happy life we have today is thanks to the sacrifices of generations of fathers and brothers who did not spare their blood and bones in the fight to protect the country. We, the youth, always remember those great contributions and strive to study and practice to inherit the tradition of "Loyalty and steadfastness of the whole people fighting the enemy" of our homeland Long An in general as well as the spirit of the victory of the battle of Hiep Thanh - Phu Ngai Tri - Mieu Ba Co in particular."

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee - Pham Tan Hoa expressed his pride and deep gratitude to the heroic martyrs, the outstanding sons of the Fatherland who "Determined to die for the Fatherland". He called on all cadres, party members, armed forces and people in the province in general, Chau Thanh district in particular, to continue to promote tradition, solidarity, and determination to successfully carry out the political tasks of the Provincial Party Committee in 2024 and the Resolution of the 11th Provincial Party Congress.

Mr. Pham Tan Hoa requested that the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the People's Committee of Chau Thanh district focus on renovating and upgrading the victory stele of the Hiep Thanh - Phu Ngai Tri battle - Ba Co Temple to match the stature and great significance of this victory. Currently, the relic area of Ba Co Temple has a victory stele and Ba Co Temple. This structure is still quite simple, and Ba Co Temple is showing signs of deterioration. The restoration and upgrading of the structure is extremely necessary, helping the younger generations understand the history of their homeland, contributing to educating revolutionary traditions./.
