Workplace communication
Late one afternoon in mid-April, after their shift ended, hundreds of workers at Hanex Hue Co., Ltd. remained at the company. They weren't working overtime, but rather attending an online awareness session on preventing and combating online fraud organized by the Hue City Federation of Labor.
The outreach session took place right in the cafeteria – a familiar space for the workers. The content was conveyed through specific situations that many workers had encountered: text messages asking for money from acquaintances' accounts, phone calls from people claiming to be officials, links requesting personal information updates, or investment offers promising "high returns, low risk..."
Through discussions with police officers from Phu Bai ward, various online scam tactics were clearly identified. From impersonating government officials and relatives to borrow money, sending malicious links, and enticing people to invest in finance, cryptocurrencies, or buy and sell goods online, all were analyzed with relatable and easy-to-understand examples.
Ms. Ho Thi Nguyen, a worker at Hanex Hue Co., Ltd., said that she used to think online scams were something far removed from her life. But after the awareness session, she realized that even a little carelessness could lead to the loss of her savings. “Working all day, I sometimes receive strange messages or calls without paying close attention. Now I know I have to double-check, not click on strange links, and not transfer money without verification. This knowledge is very necessary, not only for myself but also to remind my family members,” Ms. Nguyen shared.
During the nearly two-hour presentation, the workers not only listened but also participated by answering questions, handling situations, and directly interacting with the presenter. The atmosphere became lively, and knowledge was absorbed naturally, without feeling burdened.
At SCAVI Hue Company, another awareness session was held right after lunchtime in the canteen, focusing on drug prevention and combating social evils. For a company with a large young workforce, many of whom live far from their families, this topic is highly relevant. Mr. Nguyen Tam Phu, Chairman of the SCAVI Hue Company's Trade Union, said that the union chose this topic to help employees better identify risks and learn how to prevent them. “When workers have good awareness, the working environment is safer and more stable. Therefore, the union proposed the content and coordinated the organization at a suitable time, without affecting production,” Mr. Phu said.
At Long Tho Joint Stock Company, the training sessions focus on family life and the essential rights of employees, such as reproductive health, labor law, and parenting skills. These are relevant topics, especially for female workers, and can be applied directly to daily life.
A common feature easily noticeable in these communication sessions is that the content is not spread too thinly. Each grassroots trade union proposes a suitable topic based on the characteristics of the workforce, the needs of its members and employees, and the actual situation of the enterprise.
Flexible approach, adapting to real-world needs.
Based on the needs of the grassroots level, the City Federation of Labor Unions, in coordination with specialized units such as the police, health , and social insurance agencies, organizes direct communication sessions at businesses. As a result, each communication session is no longer a conference but becomes a practical exchange closely related to the lives of workers.
According to Mr. Nguyen Quy, Vice Chairman of the City's Labor Union, the lives of workers have changed significantly. Besides work and income, workers also face issues from the online environment, social vices, family pressure, health concerns, and constantly changing policies and laws.
"Just one click on a suspicious link can cost workers all their savings. Scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, preying on gullibility. Therefore, equipping yourself with self-protection skills in cyberspace is just as important as protecting your assets in real life," Mr. Quy emphasized.
To achieve the desired effect, communication efforts cannot simply stop at disseminating written documents. If the content is lengthy, overly theoretical, or inappropriately organized, employees will find it difficult to absorb. Given the nature of shift work, choosing the right time, the right content, and an easily understandable method of communication is crucial.
Mr. Nguyen Quy stated that when trade unions at all levels directly understand the needs of the grassroots, activities are implemented more quickly and realistically. The content of the propaganda directly addresses issues of concern to workers, thereby attracting their attention and active participation.
