Besides lilies, many other types of flowers are also being experimented with and propagated by people in the A Lưới highlands.

In the early days of 2026, we returned to the highland communes of A Lưới. The fields that were previously mainly used for short-term crops are now covered in the green of various flowers for the Tet (Lunar New Year) market.

Ms. Le Thi Thanh Nga, residing in Hamlet 2, A Luoi 2 Commune, one of the local flower growers, shared her excitement as the Tet flower season is progressing well. “In previous years, my family grew many different types of flowers. This year, we are focusing mainly on growing red lilies. This type of flower is popular in the market, not only during Tet but also on ordinary days,” Ms. Nga said.

According to Ms. Nga, her family started planting red lilies around the 10th lunar month. With suitable weather conditions and proper care techniques, the flowers are ready to be sold to traders at the wholesale market in Phu Xuan ward around the 25th or 26th of the 12th lunar month. "Each Tet season, after deducting expenses, the red lilies bring in over 70 million VND per season, helping the family cover expenses and save some money," Ms. Nga said.

Currently, A Luoi 2 commune has nearly 10 households growing flowers, covering approximately 1.2 hectares, with each household averaging 1 sao (approximately 1000 square meters) of lilies. Compared to other crops, growing lilies yields a relatively high income, ranging from 60 to 100 million VND per season. With its cool climate and fertile soil, the area is suitable for cultivating cold-climate flowers, leading many households to boldly invest and expand their flower cultivation, creating large-scale flower fields; primarily lilies and chrysanthemums. Typical lily growers include Mr. Te and Mrs. Nga, who currently cultivate 6,000 to 8,000 plants. Many households also invest in large-scale chrysanthemum cultivation, such as Mr. Chien with approximately 20,000 plants and Mr. Luu with about 13,000 plants…

According to flower growers, while local sources of seeds for flowers like chrysanthemums, petunias, marigolds, and snapdragons are readily available, lilies are entirely dependent on supplies from facilities in Hanoi. In particular, the tall red lily variety imported from the Netherlands boasts beautiful flowers, vibrant colors, and a blooming time perfectly suited for the Lunar New Year. Although farmers only cultivate lilies once a year for the Lunar New Year, the economic benefits are quite high compared to many other crops.

Compared to other ornamental flowers, lilies are considered easy to grow and resistant to pests and diseases. Growers only need to water them twice a day, along with fertilizing and adjusting care techniques to suit each growth stage. At the appropriate time, using growth stimulants helps the plants produce new shoots, buds, and flowers just in time for Tet (Vietnamese New Year), ensuring quality and a good price.

Following the initial success of several cold-climate flower cultivation models, many households in the communes of A Lưới district have learned from and replicated them. Currently, many households are investing in growing ornamental flowers in greenhouses and net houses, combined with intercropping various green vegetables, bringing in a stable and sustainable source of income.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong, Head of the Economic Department of A Luoi 2 Commune, said: “Flower cultivation not only helps people have a stable income but also creates regular jobs for many local laborers, especially women. Currently, in addition to 7 households growing flowers on a large scale to serve the Tet market, there are also many households growing flowers on a small scale in residential areas in the commune. The formation and development of flower fields is both a goal and a wish of the local people.”
