This is an event within the framework of the Photo Hanoi '25 International Photography Biennale - an international art activity initiated by the French Institute in Vietnam, in coordination with the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports , UNESCO and domestic and international partners.
The exhibition, organized by the Embassy of the Czech Republic, with the participation of two artists Štěpánka Stein and Salim Issa, extends the 2008 photo series “Little Hanoi” which caused a stir when depicting the Vietnamese community living in Prague (Czech Republic).
Mr. Hynek Kmoníček - Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Vietnam said that the exhibition introduces 60 portraits of young people of Vietnamese origin living in the Czech Republic, interspersed with landscape images of iconic landmarks in northern and central Vietnam - the homeland of many families of Vietnamese origin.
Photographer Štěpánka Stein said the exhibition features portraits and stories told by the portraits’ owners. Viewers can explore the life of a generation “between two worlds”: deeply attached to their Vietnamese roots, while also integrating and taking root in Czech culture and society . These are young Czechs of Vietnamese origin - a generation born and raised in an environment where two cultures intersect, with the desire to redefine their own identity and position in contemporary society.
“For me, photography is a way to capture things that words cannot describe — ordinary yet extraordinary people, the spirit of the times. The project Little Hanoi, Next Generation was born from the desire to understand and preserve things that seem invisible. I believe that, over time, it will become a memory that speaks — gentle yet coherent, like a bridge of understanding,” said photographer Štěpánka Stein.
