According to KCNA, during the ceremony, Mr. Kim said that this new submarine "will carry out combat missions as one of the underwater attack assets of the DPRK Navy."
KCNA said the submarine, named “Hero Kim Kun Ok,” would be “the first step in a new history of strengthening the DPRK naval force.”
“We will not retreat from the expansion of the shipbuilding industry and this is the highest priority task that must be accomplished,” Kim said, according to KCNA.
The statement came after North Korea claimed it had successfully simulated a nuclear missile attack over the weekend in a warning to the US about the “dangers of nuclear war”.
The simulation was conducted in response to combat exercises conducted by the US and South Korea.

The US-South Korea live-fire exercise based on counterattack against invading forces began on August 31.
The US and South Korean presidents have pledged to step up military cooperation following their May summit in Seoul, which came after North Korea conducted dozens of missile tests this year, compared with four in 2020 and eight in 2021.
North Korea is preparing to celebrate the 75th anniversary of its founding on September 9.
