Earlier, on February 18, Kim attended the handover ceremony of 50 600mm multiple rocket launchers, a gift from weapons industry workers to the 9th Congress of the Workers' Party of Korea.
In his speech at the ceremony, leader Kim Jong Un lavished praise on the new weapons system, asserting that these missile launchers "are virtually indistinguishable from ballistic missiles in terms of accuracy and power."
He further emphasized that they are "suitable for a special attack, that is, to accomplish a strategic mission" and are integrated with "AI technology and hybrid guidance systems." According to international analysts, the mention of a "strategic mission" is often interpreted as implying the capability of these weapon systems to carry out a nuclear attack.
This event took place on the same day as the groundbreaking ceremony for a new construction project in Hwasong district of Pyongyang, demonstrating the integration of military and economic development on the country's agenda.
The Ninth Congress is considered North Korea's biggest political event, where achievements are reviewed, new policy goals are set, and changes in leadership are possible. Kim Jong Un strongly affirmed the future direction in his speech, stating: "The Ninth Congress of our Party will declare the next stage of our self-reliant defense initiative and goals."
At the same time, the leader also declared that "the project of continuously renewing our military capabilities, aimed at strongly deterring any threats and challenges from external forces, will be accelerated."
