China warns about robots

Despite being a powerhouse in the field of humanoid robots, China warns that capital pouring in too quickly in the form of startups and investments can easily create an industry bubble.

China's top economic planning agency warned on November 27 that a bubble in humanoid robots may be forming. The announcement comes amid growing concerns that an industry bubble involving AI is about to burst.

China’s embodied intelligence industry, represented by humanoid robots, is expanding rapidly. However, Li Chao, spokesperson for the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), said at a press conference that China needs to balance “growth with the risk of an industry bubble.”

China now has more than 150 companies developing humanoid robots, with more than half of them being startups or companies moving from other sectors, according to the NDRC. Ms. Li said that capital is pouring into the field but there are few proven practical applications of such robots.

This has led to the risk of a proliferation of “look-alike” robots, while R&D funding has dwindled. “We must be vigilant against risks, including the proliferation of similar products and the shrinking space for research and development,” Ms. Li said.

Humanoid robots are seen by President Xi Jinping as one of the key technologies for China's long-term economic growth. According to a report by the Development Research Center of the State Council, the market size of the industry is expected to reach 400 billion yuan (about 56.5 billion USD ) by 2030 and exceed 1 trillion by 2035.

The country has 45 of the 131 factories and industrial facilities globally recognized by the World Economic Forum (WEF) for improving productivity through advanced technologies such as AI, which has reduced human intervention from three to 30 minutes at a time, with just a few employees monitoring dozens of screens in real time.

But the rapid development, in the style of startup and investment races, if not controlled, can turn into a technology bubble. Therefore, despite being a priority industry, the agency still issued a warning to avoid the above situation from happening.

To provide appropriate guidance for the embodied intelligence industry, the NDRC is working with relevant agencies to strengthen policy support, accelerate technological breakthroughs and promote the application of research results.

The commission will establish industry standards and evaluation systems, and improve market entry and exit mechanisms, aiming to create a healthy competitive environment. Li also said that the agency will promote the development of infrastructure for embodied intelligence, promote the integration of technology and industry resources nationwide, and accelerate the application of real life.
