The new regulations focus on reducing the use of electronic devices, increasing physical activity, and ensuring adequate sleep.
The Chinese Ministry of Education recently issued regulations requiring a reduction in academic pressure, limiting screen time, and ensuring students get adequate rest.
Accordingly, students will not be allowed to bring phones into the classroom and must have a period of "screen-free time" each day to limit their dependence on the internet. Schools must organize a minimum of two hours of physical activity each day and "strictly control" the amount of homework.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Education urged schools to "arrange study and rest time appropriately" to help students get enough sleep and maintain mental health. The agency emphasized the strict enforcement of sleep regulations, while also preventing overstudy and limiting fatigue, anxiety, and depression among students.
The Ministry of Education also pledged to reduce teachers' workload by limiting after-hours assignments and prohibiting work on weekends and holidays.
Although these measures have received support from experts, the challenge remains significant as many parents continue to seek extra tutoring to help their children excel in China's fiercely competitive academic environment.
