The author met Mr. Pham Hung Trinh, Shift Supervisor at Song Bung 4 Hydropower Plant, when he had just participated in the 11th EVN Blood Donation Week, currently taking place at the Central Power Corporation (EVNCPC).

For him, blood donation is not just a movement but has become a habit, a very natural way of sharing for those working in the electrical industry. " This is my seventh time donating blood ," Hung Trinh said with a smile, beginning his story.

From the Polytechnic lecture halls to the journey of creating a source of light.

According to Hung Trinh, ever since he was a student at the University of Technology ( Da Nang University), he has been interested in lectures on power generation processes, operating principles of electricity, and the national power system. The close collaboration between the university and Song Bung Hydropower Company in training and career guidance opened up opportunities for him to pursue a career in the field immediately after graduation.

Having passed the recruitment exam, he officially became an employee of the Song Bung Hydropower Plant and began his journey of contributing to creating a source of electricity.

With a solid foundation in electrical systems and a systematic engineering mindset, engineer Pham Hung Trinh proactively applies modern working methods to practice, making a significant contribution to the stable, safe, and efficient operation of the Song Bung 4 Hydropower Plant.

Operating a hydroelectric power plant requires almost absolute precision. Any error, however small, can affect the safety of the facility and operational efficiency. According to Mr. Hung Trinh, the operator must constantly monitor and calculate changes in water flow and reservoir water levels to promptly advise company leaders and report to competent authorities on water regulation, both during the dry and rainy seasons.

The operation of reservoirs and dams must strictly adhere to principles and regulations. In all cases, the highest level of safety must be ensured for the structure and the downstream area.

From his early days operating the machinery to his role as Shift Supervisor, he has always maintained a proactive and inquisitive spirit. Committed to the machinery and its operation, he has introduced numerous innovative ideas and technical improvements to enhance the work process.

Most recently, he and his colleagues came up with an initiative to apply digital transformation to the automated issuance of work permits.

According to Hung Trinh, previously, all work permits were done by hand, which was both time-consuming and inflexible in certain situations. Based on this, he and several colleagues developed an internal website to automate the permit issuance process, significantly shortening processing time and improving operational efficiency. “Now, the working unit only needs to access the internal website, enter the information, and click submit. Based on the entered information, the website will automatically generate a work permit. In addition, the team is adding many features to support operational work, such as: issuing operation permits, digitizing operational procedures, technical drawings, etc., ” Hung Trinh said.

Previously, his master's thesis on hydroelectric reservoir regulation was also extensively applied to his duties as a shift supervisor, particularly in managing reservoir operations during the rainy season and floods, contributing to ensuring the safety of the structures and reducing flooding downstream.

Having worked in the electricity industry for over 13 years, Shift Supervisor Hung Trinh said that he has accumulated many wonderful experiences: from volunteer work trips and participation in social activities to opportunities for learning and improving his professional skills.

However, what impressed him most and made him even more proud of the job he had chosen and dedicated himself to was the efforts of him and his shift team in overcoming difficulties during the recent days of heavy rain and flooding.

The distance from the workers' residences to the Song Bung 4 plant is approximately 10km. During each normal shift, Hung Trinh and his colleagues would travel by company shuttle bus. However, during the heavy rains at the end of October 2025, the road to the plant in the mountainous area suffered serious landslides, making it impassable for vehicles.

There was no other way, my colleagues and I decided to wade through the mud and cross the mountains to get to the factory to take over the operation,” Hung Trinh recalled, adding, “We knew the journey could be dangerous due to landslides in many sections, but we encouraged each other and tried our best because there was a shift on duty at the factory that had been working multiple shifts consecutively. If there wasn’t someone to replace them in time, the health of the shift could be compromised, and it could directly affect the operation.”

After walking for over four hours, everyone was covered in mud when they arrived at the factory; some even lost their sandals or safety shoes along the way.

Despite the long distances and hardships, electrical engineer Pham Hung Trinh's love for his profession has made it his enduring career choice. "If I could choose again, I would still choose to operate a hydroelectric power plant ." For him, being a part of a cohesive team and contributing to the power supply is an honor and a source of pride for an electrical engineer.

With his dedication and sense of responsibility in his professional work, Mr. Pham Hung Trinh has received numerous commendations from various levels, from Certificates of Merit from the Minister of Industry and Trade to Certificates of Merit from the Vietnam Electricity Group, EVNGENCO2, and Song Bung Hydropower Company. Mr. Trinh was also awarded the title of "Party Member who has excellently fulfilled his duties" for five consecutive years (2019-2023) by the Executive Committee of the Party Committee of the Vietnam Electricity Group.
