Consecutive storms No. 5 and No. 10 that hit Nghe An province in late August and September 2025 caused serious damage to many schools in Nghe An province. Until now, many months after "storm on storm", traces of damage and loss are still present. In the photo, the corrugated iron roof of the 3-storey building of Le Thi Bach Cat Secondary School (Cua Lo ward) was completely blown away by the storm and cannot be repaired or restored.

The storm also caused about 50m of the fence to collapse, leaving the school grounds empty. In particular, the corrugated iron roof of the 3-story building was completely blown away, causing water to leak into the classrooms every time it rained, damaging desks, chairs and teaching equipment. The school was forced to move equipment to the lower floor. Some equipment that could not be moved had to be temporarily covered with tarpaulins.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Ha, Vice Principal of Le Thi Bach Cat Secondary School, said that the consequences of storm No. 5 had not yet been overcome when storm No. 10 made landfall, causing heavy damage to the school. Until now, the storm has passed, but the consequences have not been overcome.

“The three-story building’s roof has not been repaired yet. When it rains, the water leaks down to the lower floors, posing a risk of electrical short circuits and fires, which is very dangerous. The computer room, the students’ favorite place, is now severely damaged and unusable. Students are forced to miss this subject, which seriously affects the teaching program,” said Mr. Ha.

After the recent storm No. 10, 3 classrooms in the 2-story building of Nghi An Secondary School (Vinh Phu Ward) were forced to lock their doors because of rainwater seeping in and the corrugated iron roof was severely damaged by the wind. Due to lack of funds and inability to repair the damage, the school had to move students to temporary functional rooms.

Ms. Le Viet Hong, Principal of Nghi An Secondary School, said that after storm No. 5, the teachers and parents made efforts to mobilize resources to overcome the damage, with the hope that students could return to school soon in safe conditions. However, before things could stabilize, storm No. 10 continued to hit, causing more heavy losses. The storm blew off the roof of the entire two-story building, causing rainwater to leak into the classrooms. The network system, televisions, computers as well as teaching and learning equipment were all damaged, affecting teaching and learning activities, with estimated damage of more than 1 billion VND.

According to statistics from the Department of Education and Training of Nghe An province, the recent storms have caused severe damage with more than 60 schools being flooded and landslides; more than 220 schools having their roofs blown off; thousands of teaching equipment and school supplies being damaged, with estimated damage of over 200 billion VND. The prompt repair of damaged items will not only help stabilize teaching and learning, but also ensure the safety of thousands of students and teachers who go to school every day. This is an urgent requirement, requiring the cooperation of all levels of government and the community.

Regarding the repair and restoration of schools after the storm, on August 12, the Ministry of Public Security and Nghe An province launched a 40-day and night campaign to build houses and schools to support people in flooded areas. As for schools, the Ministry of Public Security will rebuild My Ly 2 Primary Boarding School, which was completely damaged after the historic flood.

In addition, implementing the policy of building schools in border communes according to Conclusion Notice No. 81-TB/TW dated July 18, 2025 of the Politburo, in Nghe An, 21 primary and secondary schools were built.
Of which, there are 10 schools implemented in phase 1 including communes: Keng Du, Na Ngoi, Nhon Mai, Bac Ly, Mon Son, Que Phong, Tam Thai, Anh Son, Tri Le and Hanh Lam.
