A series of leaked information suggests that Apple plans to launch the "thinnest ever" iPhone 17 Air along with the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max next September.
The question of concern is what Apple cut to achieve this capability. One source said it was the battery.
According to the Instant Digital account on social network Weibo, who often makes highly accurate predictions about Apple products, the iPhone 17 Air's battery capacity "does not exceed 3,000 mAh".
MacRumors says this lines up with previous rumors that the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air will have a 2,800 mAh battery. For comparison, the iPhone 16 Pro Max has a 4,685 mAh battery while the iPhone 16 is equipped with a 3,561 mAh battery.
Whichever way you slice it, it's a significant drop. In fact, the last iPhone with a battery capacity below 3,000 mAh, the iPhone 13 mini with a 2,438 mAh battery, was released four years ago.
The market might shy away from an iPhone with a small battery capacity, especially considering how important battery life is to most users.
The company introduced Adaptive Power in iOS 26, which will “make small performance adjustments to extend battery life.” If you’re planning on upgrading to the iPhone 17 Air in the coming months, this might be one of the first features you turn on after activating your phone.
Additionally, in May, The Information reported that Apple plans to release a new battery case specifically for the iPhone 17 Air.
Through internal testing, the company found that about 60-70% of iPhone 17 Air users can use their phones all day without needing to recharge. Compared to the 80-90% of other iPhone 17 models, this is a notable weakness.
