Nestled deep in the deserted valley of the Judean Desert, about 15km east of Bethlehem, the Mar Saba Monastery (also known as the Monastery of Saint Sabbas) is one of the most ancient and sacred monasteries of Eastern Christianity.
With a history of more than 1,500 years, this place is not only a symbol of faith but also a living testament to the power of steadfastness and spiritual tranquility in the midst of harsh nature.
The monastery was founded by Saint Sabbas (Saba the Sanctified) in 483 AD, on the steep slopes of the Kidron Valley.
Over the centuries, Mar Saba has maintained the ascetic lifestyle of Greek Orthodox monks, becoming one of the oldest continuously operating monasteries in the world . In particular, the monastery still maintains the ancient tradition of not allowing women to enter - a rule that is strictly respected to this day.
Mar Saba’s architecture is distinctly Byzantine, with brown stone walls blending into the desert sands, creating a majestic and tranquil setting. Inside, small chapels, an ancient library and the relics of Saint Sabbas are still carefully preserved.
From above, the monastery appears to be suspended between cliffs, evoking a feeling both sacred and surreal.
Today, although only a few monks live and pray here, Mar Saba Monastery is still an attractive destination for pilgrims and tourists who love to explore culture and history. For those who set foot in the Holy Land, Mar Saba is not only a place to admire the beauty of ancient architecture but also a journey to find tranquility and faith in the heart of the desert./.
