Propaganda against illegal fishing for fishermen in Quynh Phu commune

In order to diversify the types of propaganda during the peak period against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, on the evening of November 1, in Quynh Phu commune, the Department of Agriculture and Environment coordinated with the Provincial Border Guard to organize community communication against IUU fishing for fishermen in the area.

Comrade Nguyen Van De - Member of the Provincial Party Standing Committee, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee attended. Also attending were representatives of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Nghe An province and departments and branches that are members of the Provincial Steering Committee on IUU.

On the local side, there were representatives of the leaders of Quynh Phu commune, the Coastal Border Guard Station, the Commune Fisheries Association and over 300 fishermen .

At the event, the representative of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of the province emphasized that this is one of the activities responding to the peak period of the fight against IUU fishing to remove the yellow card with the whole country. The purpose is to propagate in a visual and vivid form to create a clearer change in the awareness of fishermen. Thereby, contributing to the sustainable results of the fight and handling of violations; creating a basis for the province and the whole country to prepare to welcome the inspection team of the European Commission to come to Vietnam to inspect and remove the yellow card...

On this occasion, representatives of the Provincial IUU Steering Committee shared the difficulties and limitations in the fight against IUU fishing in recent times; the impacts and consequences of illegal fishing on the future of Vietnam's fisheries industry and the impact on people's livelihoods and careers if the yellow card is not removed in the near future.

On this occasion, representatives of the Department of Agriculture and Environment presented some information, leadership and direction measures of the Central Government, the province and plans of the authorities to control and monitor fishing vessels in the coming time so that fishermen can know, share and join hands in the fight against illegal fishing; voluntarily comply and mobilize relatives to carry out responsible fishing and exploitation activities for sustainable fishing.

Through the form of dramatization of skits and short plays, the authorities have incorporated and raised questions about practical situations when fishermen participate in fishing at sea, thereby answering and guiding fishermen to fish in accordance with the Fisheries Law, participating more actively in combating IUU fishing.

On this occasion, the Provincial Steering Committee on IUU had gifts and presented 300 national flags to vehicle owners and captains participating in going offshore.

Quynh Phu is one of the key fishing communes of Nghe An province. The commune has 15.5 km of coastline with 2 estuaries, Lach Thoi and Lach Quen. The whole commune has 47/69 villages participating in seafood exploitation with nearly 900 fishing vessels, of which 360 vessels are 15m or longer for offshore fishing. The natural area of ​​the whole commune is 33.48 km2 and the population is over 72,000 people, of which more than 4,000 are fishing workers./.
