Meta, Facebook 's parent company, is working on a new platform for sharing text updates. It could be the most high-profile new contender to replace Twitter, the world's largest social media network.
“We are exploring a standalone decentralized social network for sharing text updates. Creators and public figures will have the opportunity to share updates about their interests in a separate space,” a Meta spokesperson confirmed.
Meta has yet to reveal the name, specific features, or launch schedule of the new platform, but it's known by the codename P92. P92 is still in its early stages, and will be led by Instagram head Adam Mosseri, according to Platformer.
The app will be branded as Instagram and will allow users to sign up/log in to it using their Instagram accounts. However, “data sharing from Instagram to P92 will be minimal, if not non-existent” after the initial sign-up, MoneyControl reports.

P92 will be decentralized, meaning users will be able to create different servers or communities, each with their own rules instead of a central platform controlled by Meta. The concept is similar to Reddit or Discord, but different from how Meta's other platforms work.
Additionally, third parties can build applications and features into the platform, giving users an experience that goes beyond what Meta alone can build.
The initial version of P92 is expected to have some features like links in posts with previews (like Twitter), user bios, usernames, verification badges, images and videos that will be shared on the initial versions of the app.
Additionally, the P92 will also display follower counts and likes. The app will also have commenting and messaging features, but it is unclear whether these will appear in the first version of the product.
The development of P92 comes as Twitter grapples with frequent outages, the return of controversial users, and a decline in advertisers.
Tech companies and startups have taken advantage of this opportunity to create new platforms to attract users looking for alternatives to Twitter, such as Mastodon, Post.news, or T2.

Mastodon, a decentralized social network launched in 2016, grew its user base from 300,000 users to more than 2.5 million in the weeks after the Tesla CEO completed his acquisition of Twitter in late October 2022.
However, Mastodon's growth has slowed in recent months, partly due to users having difficulty using a less user-friendly decentralized platform.
Meta's new service could benefit from the company's large existing user base on other platforms, including the 2 billion people who use Facebook daily.
In December 2022, Instagram also introduced a new feature called Notes that allows users to share short posts of up to 60 characters using only text and emojis. According to The New York Times, the company considered turning the feature into a Twitter competitor .
