Previously, in April 2025, Starlink received a license to become the first foreign enterprise approved by Vietnam to pilot satellite internet services. SpaceX then proceeded with the procedures to establish a legal entity in Vietnam before applying for a license to provide services from the regulatory authorities.

LEO (Low Earth Orbit) satellite communications systems operate at altitudes ranging from approximately 160 to under 2,000 km above sea level.

Thanks to its low orbit, LEO offers low signal latency, high data transmission speeds, and wide coverage without requiring extensive ground infrastructure.

Typical LEO systems include SpaceX's Starlink system, Amazon's Kuiper system, and Oneweb's Oneweb system, with Starlink currently leading in the number of satellites with over 6,000 satellites launched and put into operation as of February 2025.

In Vietnam, terrestrial telecommunications infrastructure is primarily based on fiber optic networks and 4G/5G base transceiver stations (BTS), deployed and operated by major network operators such as Viettel, VNPT, and MobiFone .

After completing the necessary procedures and launching commercial operations, Vietnam is expected to become the fifth country in Southeast Asia to have Starlink service, after the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Timor Leste. Prior to this, the Radio Frequency Department had also granted licenses for the use of radio frequencies and equipment for this service.
