Information from the conference indicates that multimodal transport in Vietnam still faces many shortcomings. Market share is unbalanced, with road transport accounting for up to 75% of the volume of goods transported. Meanwhile, high-volume transport modes such as rail account for a very small share of about 0.18%, inland waterways 19.8%, sea 4.9%, and air only 0.02%.
In Vietnam, the proportion of multimodal transport has not yet reached 10%, while in developed countries, this proportion is over 25-40%. The core issue lies not only in building more infrastructure, but also in the capacity to organize, connect, and optimize the existing system. Despite its enormous potential, the transport system is facing imbalances and inefficiencies in several areas.
Frankly acknowledging the shortcomings in multimodal transport connectivity, Minister Tran Hong Minh requested management agencies, businesses, and experts to carefully assess the current situation and factors affecting the development of multimodal transport in order to focus on removing obstacles.
In particular, the Minister requested that management agencies propose solutions to promote the connectivity of transportation modes, ensuring synchronization in policies, planning, infrastructure, digital transformation, green transformation, and the development of multimodal transport enterprises so that each mode of transport operates according to its proper role.
Specifically, road transport will play a connecting and transit role, linking the initial and final stages of transport; rail transport will handle large volumes and long-distance transport; maritime transport will handle import and export goods; inland waterway transport will handle large volumes at low cost; and air transport will handle fast transport of high-value goods.
Minister Tran Hong Minh emphasized that developing multimodal transport is not only a matter of connecting transportation infrastructure, but also a matter of national competitiveness, ensuring economic security, and achieving the goal of making Vietnam a regional and global goods transit hub in the new era.
