U.22 Vietnam will have a heated match with U.22 Indonesia in the semi-finals of the 32nd SEA Games at 4:00 p.m. today, May 13. This is the most anticipated match, as both teams are strong candidates for the championship. While U.22 Vietnam is the reigning SEA Games champion, U.22 Indonesia won the bronze medal at the previous tournament.
U.22 Vietnam finished second in Group B after 4 matches, with 10 points. Coach Philippe Troussier's team had tough matches against U.22 Laos and U.22 Singapore in the opening round, but they have grown through each match. Van Khang and his teammates defeated U.22 Malaysia 2-1, then drew with U.22 Thailand in the final match despite changing 8 key players.
U.22 Vietnam had a commendable draw against U.22 Thailand
U.22 Indonesia had a convincing performance to top Group A. The team from the archipelago "swept" its opponents when defeating U.22 Philippines (3-0), U.22 Myanmar (5-0) and U.22 Timor Leste (3-0). In the final match against host U.22 Cambodia, despite only fielding a reserve team to conserve energy, coach Indra Sjafri and his team still won 2-1.
U.22 Vietnam has every reason to be confident. In the last 5 times they met the team nicknamed "Garuda" at the SEA Games, U.22 Vietnam won all of them. That was the 3-0 victory at SEA Games 31, the double victory with the score of 2-1 (group stage) and 3-0 (final) at SEA Games 30, the 0-0 draw at SEA Games 29, or the 5-0 victory at SEA Games 28 to win the bronze medal. In general, U.22 Vietnam has never been afraid of U.22 Indonesia in the youth football field.
However, U.22 Indonesia has made remarkable progress in recent times by training a generation of promising players, with talents who have proven themselves such as Marselino Ferdinan, Witan Sulaeman, Arhan Pratama, Ronaldo Kwateh,... According to coach Troussier, the match against U.22 Indonesia will be very difficult, requiring U.22 Vietnam to play with concentration, show the desire to win and have reasonable tactics.
Waiting for Coach Troussier to have a strategy to counter U.22 Indonesia
"U.22 Indonesia is very strong, with a reasonable playing style. U.22 Vietnam must make maximum effort. We will have a beautiful, quality semi-final match and that is good for the development of Southeast Asian football. For me, each match has its own characteristics. We know that the deeper we go in each tournament, the more pressure will increase. I think the most important factor for tomorrow's match is the players' confidence. That cannot come from the words of encouragement I convey to them. Half of the U.22 Vietnam team is the U.20 team. They all have talent and qualities, but at that age the players do not have practical experience and courage, which leads to tension.
The coaching staff is confident that they can communicate and connect with U.22 Vietnam both with and without the ball. Over the past 2 months, we have trained for moments like this, instilling confidence in the players through tactics and tactics. I think that confidence will continue after yesterday's match against U.22 Thailand. I have given opportunities to players who have not played much before. Hopefully through this match, I will have more options for the semi-finals," said Coach Troussier.
In the remaining semi-final, U.22 Thailand will face U.22 Myanmar at 8:00 p.m. on May 13. The two winning teams will meet in the final on May 16.
