U23 Indonesia entered the second match of Group A with the goal of defeating U23 Philippines to firmly hold the top spot in the group, opening the door to the semi-finals of the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Championship taking place at home.
Although they surpassed the away team in terms of ball control and number of shots on goal, the archipelago team was stuck in finding a goal.
From a throw-in straight into the U23 Philippines penalty area, coach Gerald Vanenburg's team scored a goal, after defender Jaime Rosquillo scored an own goal.
With 2 consecutive wins, U23 Indonesia firmly established the top position in Group A with 6 points. Meanwhile, U23 Philippines has the same 3 points as U23 Malaysia but still ranks 2nd thanks to a better head-to-head record.
Earlier in the day, U23 Malaysia had a resounding 7-1 victory over U23 Brunei. This result also made Brunei the first team to be eliminated after the group stage.
