UEFA Champions League rules change, many Premier League teams benefit

(Dan Tri) - The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has just announced a change in the law and allows clubs to add a "temporary" replacement player in case a player is injured or has a long-term illness.

This decision was made by UEFA to ensure that the registration list is not unfairly reduced and to avoid players being put under additional pressure due to the workload.

However, the right to use a "temporary" substitute only applies until matchday 6 in December, the end of the Conference League group stage.

UEFA’s new policy has given some clubs an advantage. Last week, five Premier League teams announced their Champions League squads. Many notable names were left out, leaving many fans surprised.

For example, at Chelsea, coach Enzo Maresca has left new signing Facundo Buononotte out of the Champions League squad. However, according to the new regulations, Buononotte can completely return to this tournament and replace Liam Delap, the player who is suffering from a hamstring injury.

Other stars not included in the Champions League squad are Liverpool striker Federico Chiesa, Tottenham striker Mathys Tel and Arsenal's Gabriel Jesus, who are all nursing injuries and will also have a chance to return to the Champions League immediately, if they are fit before matchday six in December.

Under the old rules, these players would have had to wait until the knockout stages after Christmas to have a chance to return. However, the new change from UEFA could help reverse the situation.

In addition to amending the law, on September 11 in Albania, UEFA officials also agreed on the venue for the finals of European tournaments. Accordingly, the 2027 Champions League final will take place at Atletico Madrid's Wanda Metropolitano stadium.

The last time the Metropolitano hosted a Champions League final was in 2019. Liverpool beat Tottenham 2-0.

Along with that, UEFA also announced the venues for other tournaments: the 2027 Women's Champions League final at the National Stadium in Warsaw (Poland); the 2026 Super Cup, the 2026 Futsal Champions League final, the European U19 Futsal and the Women's Futsal Euros will be held in Salzburg (Austria), Pesaro (Italy), Astana (Kazakhstan) and Osijek (Croatia).
