Ukraine opens a "UAV arena" to hunt down Russian troops.

Over western Ukraine, a P1-SUN interceptor drone soared into the air and then suddenly severed the tow rope of a target balloon, to the cheers of dozens of soldiers watching below, according to Reuters.

But this wasn't a typical technology show. Ukraine has just turned drone warfare into a real "game of life and death," where top military drone pilots compete against each other for prestige, cutting-edge equipment, and battlefield advantage over Russia.

The competition, titled “Wild Drones,” was held outside the resort town of Truskavets, bringing together pilots from 19 of Ukraine’s most elite UAV units, along with numerous drone manufacturers directly supplying equipment to the front lines.

UAV warfare has completely changed the landscape of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Young soldiers controlling drones with game controllers, even from command centers tens of kilometers away from the front lines, have now become a nightmare for Russian soldiers.

"This is an opportunity for units to exchange experiences, learn from each other, and access the latest technologies from manufacturers," said a commander nicknamed "Grey," from the Black Raven UAV battalion of the 93rd Mechanized Brigade.

Notably, Ukraine is also adopting a "gamification of warfare" model. Last year, Kyiv implemented a points system for verified drone target destruction. Units can use these reward points to exchange for military equipment on online platforms such as DOT-Chain and Brave1 Market – dubbed the "Amazon for war".

"It's like choosing a car. Each type of drone has a different purpose," said a soldier from the 22nd Independent Mechanized Brigade.

According to Ukrainian officials, this system helps promote competition among units while ensuring that resources are allocated to the most efficient pilots.

While Russia rewards the destruction of enemy equipment with money, Ukraine also awards points for human-related targets. Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov once stated that Kyiv aims to inflict casualties on approximately 50,000 Russian soldiers each month to wear down Moscow's fighting capacity. Ukraine currently estimates that Russia is losing around 35,000 troops per month, a figure Moscow denies.

Despite its competitive nature, the Wild Drones event also provided a rare moment of relaxation for soldiers who had been fighting continuously since 2022. BBQ areas, social gatherings, and even soldiers' families appearing at the event made it resemble a military technology festival more than a battlefield.

However, behind that atmosphere lies an extremely fierce technological race.

Ukrainian officers said they are constantly working directly with the manufacturer to improve the drones based on real-world combat feedback.

"If it's a drone version today, it could be completely different just three months from now," said the commander nicknamed "Dym" of the Black Raven unit.

One of the biggest changes is the expansion of the “dead zone”—the area within range of UAVs. This zone now extends approximately 15 km on each side of the front line, where soldiers and military vehicles can be attacked at any time.

In addition to attack capabilities, many heavy-duty drones, such as Skyfall's Vampire, are also used to transport food, water, and medical supplies into dangerous areas, reducing the number of soldiers who need to directly access the front lines.

A Skyfall representative revealed that the company can now produce more than 10,000 UAVs per day and is receiving continuous feedback from the front lines.

"The biggest need right now is automation, so that fewer people can control more drones," said a representative nicknamed "Ares."

The winning teams in Wild Drones will receive three Vampire UAVs along with batteries and support systems – rewards that can be immediately deployed to the real battlefield.
