Ukraine says Russia hacked and took control of two surveillance cameras in Kiev, allowing it to pinpoint key targets for attacks.
"Two online surveillance cameras were hacked by Russian intelligence to monitor military activities in the capital Kiev," the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) wrote on Telegram on January 2.
According to the SBU, the first camera was installed by local police on the balcony of an apartment building to monitor the surrounding area. After taking control of the camera, Russian intelligence changed its angle of view and connected it to the social network Youtube to be able to directly observe the images captured by the camera. The other camera was installed by residents in the parking lot of a residential area.
"They broadcast images of the operation of air defense systems and revealed the locations of important infrastructure in Kiev during the Russian attack on January 2," the SBU said, adding that the cameras had been disabled.

Ukraine's military said Russia deployed 134 missiles of various types and 35 suicide drones (UAVs) to attack the country on January 2, Moscow's second large-scale attack in a week.
Ukraine’s air defenses claimed to have shot down all 10 Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, 62 Kh-101 and Kalibr cruise missiles, and 35 suicide drones. However, the missiles that got through the air defenses killed five people and injured more than 130, mostly in the capital Kiev, according to the Ukrainian Interior Ministry .
The SBU said it was taking “comprehensive measures” to prevent similar cyberattacks in the future, and asked owners of surveillance cameras in Ukraine to “stop broadcasting live from their devices.” The SBU also urged citizens to report cases of such broadcasts to the agency.
According to the SBU, since the beginning of the conflict, Ukrainian cyber security forces have disabled more than 10,000 cameras that they believe may have been taken over by Russia.
Moscow has launched a series of large-scale attacks on Ukrainian territory in recent days. According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, from December 29 to January 2, Russia launched a total of 500 missiles and UAVs into urban areas in this country.

Ukrainian media reported on December 4 that Russia had attacked the center of the city of Kurakhove in Donetsk Oblast at midnight, destroying and damaging many buildings. Moscow also launched two attacks on the city of Kharkov in the same Oblast, apparently using modified S-300 missiles.
The British Ministry of Defense believes Russia is targeting Ukraine's military infrastructure, rather than attacking its rival's energy grid like last winter.
Moscow also announced that the airstrikes targeted defense industry corporations specializing in the production of missiles and UAVs, as well as military equipment repair facilities, missile depots, ammunition and aviation weapons provided by the West to Kiev.
