Applying AI to optimize the teaching-learning process
AI is being deployed by higher education institutions with many rich models such as personalized learning, teaching assistants, experimental simulations to academic analysis... bringing many practical benefits to lecturers and students. Dr. Kieu Phuong Thuy, senior lecturer of the Faculty of Information Technology, School of Mathematics and Information Technology (Hanoi National University of Education) said: AI has effectively supported the preparation of lectures, helping to significantly reduce the time for teachers. The school is currently promoting the "flipped classroom" model, in which lecturers provide learning materials for students to research in advance, while class time focuses on solving problems that are still unclear. AI also supports students in asking and answering questions right on the lecture platform. The method of assessing learning outcomes has also shifted from testing memorization ability to assessing application ability and the quality of actual learning products. AI supports students in self-studying more effectively but cannot replace tasks that require analytical and evaluative thinking; At the same time, the lecturer still has complete control over the teaching process.

Hanoi National University of Education is also implementing AI applications in testing to analyze questions, build question banks and prepare exam questions; at the same time, aiming to use AI in analyzing learning outcomes and admission results, thereby providing more scientific basis for admission work in the coming time.
The University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) is a unit that has contributed a lot to the Ministry of Education and Training in developing the Circular promulgating the Digital Competency Framework for learners in the national education system. Notably, the school has organized a training course on "Breakthrough with Gen AI in teaching and research", equipping staff and lecturers with Gen AI application skills. Students are taught specific skills to effectively apply in learning and research such as: Using Gen AI to summarize documents, brainstorm ideas and create effective presentation slides. Final year students are also supported with the necessary skills in accessing the labor market to have good job opportunities. In addition, the school has put into use MOOCs electronic lectures with the Basic Informatics course, integrating multimedia elements such as sharp videos, vivid sounds and easy-to-use interactions, contributing to promoting digitalized and personalized training.
At Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Dr. Nguyen Thanh Hung, Head of the Training Department, said: Since 2023, the school has deployed the smart virtual assistant HUSTVA, providing personalized experiences for each student and staff: from studying, researching to career orientation. In addition, the school is also piloting an AI tool to support the analysis of learning data to give early warnings to students at risk of poor learning so that timely support solutions can be provided...
AI cannot replace teachers
Despite its many benefits, reality shows that AI cannot replace the teacher's guiding role. Master Cao Hong Hue, senior lecturer at the Institute of Information Technology, Deputy Director of the Center for Communication and Learning Materials Production, Hanoi Pedagogical University 2, emphasized: AI is opening a new era of learning, where knowledge is personalized and learning data becomes the foundation for methodological innovation, but that does not reduce the role of the teacher, on the contrary, that role is becoming more important than ever. The core value of a teacher lies in humanity, pedagogical emotions and the ability to orient life values, which no intelligent system can replace.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Duc Son, Principal of Hanoi National University of Education, also believes that AI is just a support tool. If teachers depend on AI, it will reduce logical thinking and pedagogical creativity. Therefore, the use of AI requires a clear identification of the strengths and weaknesses of the technology.
According to Dr. Nguyen Thanh Hung, the application of AI in higher education in Vietnam is currently facing many challenges: Student databases, programs and learning outcomes are still scattered, lacking digitization and connectivity. The server system and data centers serving AI are still limited, leading to implementation depending on small, unsynchronized projects. Regarding human resources, the team of lecturers with deep knowledge of AI in education is still small, mainly using AI as a support tool. Currently, regulations on data security, privacy and academic ethics are unclear, creating a hesitant mentality in applying AI. Meanwhile, a number of lecturers and students are still afraid of AI, fearing that it will replace the role of teachers or increase academic fraud...
From the above opportunities and challenges, it can be seen that the application of Al in education can only be truly effective when combined with innovation in training models, improving staff capacity and perfecting policies. This is also a requirement for the entire industry in the current digital transformation period.
Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son affirmed that AI cannot replace the role of teachers but sets new requirements: Teachers must learn for life, must understand AI to teach people in the AI era; must shift from the primary role of imparting knowledge to guiding, instructing, supporting, developing learning capacity and self-study, lifelong learning of learners.
AI cannot replace the role of teachers, but it poses new requirements: Teachers must learn for life, must understand AI to teach people in the AI era; must shift from the primary role of imparting knowledge to guiding, instructing, supporting, developing the learning capacity and self-learning, lifelong learning of learners.
Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son
The Ministry of Education and Training is directing educational institutions to strengthen training, raise awareness, understanding and capacity to apply AI to lead and master AI applications; develop AI education programs from primary school level; perfect institutions, issue and complete regulations and guidelines, including handbooks, codes of conduct, regulations on security, data use and privacy. This is an important legal corridor to ensure responsible and safe AI application and preserve ethical and humanistic values in education.
