(NLDO)- The humane action of a college in Ho Chi Minh City has given students more motivation to overcome cancer and continue studying.

On the morning of February 19, Dr. Hoang Van Phuc, Principal of Saigon Polytechnic College (Go Vap District), said that the school had awarded an honorary diploma to a student with cancer who is being treated at Cho Ray Hospital.

The Board of Directors of Saigon Polytechnic College went to Cho Ray Hospital to award honorary diplomas to students on February 18.

Pham Viet Xo (from Thai Binh ), a student of the Faculty of Automotive Engineering Technology, was diagnosed with cancer when he was in his second year. At that time, Xo had almost completed his college program, but had to temporarily stop studying to be hospitalized for treatment.

Ms. Pham Thi Lien, Xo’s mother, said that her son had suffered from autism spectrum disorder since he was a child, but he tried very hard in his studies. Since discovering that he had cancer, the family’s financial situation has become even more difficult, having to borrow money from everywhere to pay for treatment, the amount of money reaching hundreds of millions of dong.

Realizing that Xo's family circumstances were difficult and his efforts in studying were great, the school's Board of Directors met and decided to award the male student an honorary bachelor's degree. A representative of the school's Board of Directors went to the hospital to present the diploma to the student.

"The school hopes that this bachelor's degree can motivate Xo to overcome his illness, then study hard to realize his future dreams. At the same time, the school will refund all tuition fees so that the family has more money for medical treatment," Dr. Phuc said.

At present, the school has called on staff, lecturers and students to support Xo's situation with an amount of more than 15 million VND.

Holding her son's diploma in her hand, Ms. Lien emotionally said: "I always taught my son to study hard, no matter how difficult it is, I will try to let him study well. My husband and I did not have a full education, so life was very difficult, that's why Xo had to study hard to change his life. This diploma is the most meaningful gift for my family."
