In an executive order signed on September 16, Mr. Trump extended the deadline to December 16 for the parent company ByteDance in China to be forced to divest from TikTok.

Over the past nine months, President Trump has signed a total of three executive orders to delay the deadline, which was originally set by former President Joe Biden in April 2024 under the Protecting Americans from Apps Controlled by Foreign Adversaries Act.

Many US government officials have repeatedly warned that TikTok could threaten national security, arguing that ByteDance - a company headquartered in Beijing - has shared US user data with China. TikTok has repeatedly denied these allegations.

On September 15, President Trump revealed that a framework agreement with China on the transfer of TikTok assets to a US owner had been reached, although specific details have not been made public.

On the same day, September 15, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent informed that the US and China had reached a framework agreement regarding TikTok's operations in the US, within the framework of the trade and economic negotiations held in Madrid, Spain from September 14-17.

The deal aims to bring TikTok under US-controlled ownership, but the final details will be discussed directly by President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping during a phone call scheduled for September 19, according to Mr. Bessent.
