People are asking whether being skilled in one's profession is enough, or if young people today also need to know English to be ready to enter the job market?

On the morning of March 27th, the 16th Annual Vocational Skills Competition for Students and Graduates officially took place at the Ho Chi Minh City College of Foreign Trade Economics .

A new feature of this year's competition is the English language section, which has raised questions among many students, parents, and even guardians. For many, vocational skills competitions have traditionally focused on practical skills, professional expertise, and real-world work capabilities. Therefore, the addition of English has led to the question: "Why is a foreign language necessary for a vocational competition?"

According to Nguyen Dang Khoa, Deputy Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Youth Union and President of the Vietnam Student Association of Ho Chi Minh City, this year's competition has many new features, including the English content being adjusted to 100% conversational English, helping students improve their foreign language skills in the context of integration and practical work environments.

Khoa believes that looking at the exam schedule, it's clear that English is now required in many professions, demonstrating that foreign languages are no longer a skill outside of professional expertise. In an increasingly professional work environment, it is gradually becoming an essential supplementary competency.

According to Mr. Khoa, the current labor market has changed significantly, requiring young people not only to have strong professional skills but also to be able to adapt to new demands, including communication skills and the ability to use foreign languages.

In category A, for students in grades 9 and above who have graduated from junior high school, there are 8 vocational courses such as website development, graphic design, network cabling, room service, business accounting, mechatronics, automatic control, and beauty care.

Category B, for high school graduates (12+ years old), includes 11 professions such as graphic design, website development, IT network system administration, tour guide, restaurant service, culinary arts, business accounting, automation control, and machining.

Nguyen Nhat Huy, a student at the Ho Chi Minh City College of Foreign Trade Economics and a contestant in the tour guide profession, believes that the competition is not only an opportunity to test knowledge and skills but also helps contestants experience the practical requirements of the profession.

According to Huy, in addition to professional skills and demeanor, communication skills and proficiency in English are also important assets for students to confidently enter the job market.

Meanwhile, Dinh To Nhi, a student at the Ho Chi Minh City College of Economics, who took the business accounting exam and scored 92 points in the English section, said she had prepared quite thoroughly. Nhi believes that English has helped her become more confident, access materials better, and open up more job opportunities in the future.

The competition took place from March 27th to April 23rd. According to the organizers, the competition promised to be a meaningful activity, contributing to spreading the movement of emulation in learning, developing vocational skills, and arousing creativity and a thirst for knowledge among students in Ho Chi Minh City.
