To date, designer Viet Hung has showcased his ao dai (Vietnamese traditional dress) hundreds of times in more than 40 countries and territories around the world .

26 years of promoting the ao dai (Vietnamese traditional dress) to the world.

The collections have been showcased on runways across countries from Asia to Europe, including South Korea, Japan, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, the USA, Canada, Australia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Germany, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands…

In particular, he has returned to perform dozens of times in countries such as Japan and South Korea.

These promotional programs are organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports, or the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism, and are integrated into cultural and tourism exchange activities and trade promotion.

Vietnamese designer Viet Hung told Tuoi Tre Online : “Performing domestically, I was both nervous and happy. Seeing the ao dai (traditional Vietnamese dress) fluttering in a foreign country, admired by international audiences and receiving favorable glances, my pride and happiness doubled.”

According to him, each trip is not simply a fashion show, but a cultural dialogue.

"I've never just brought my own style abroad. In every country I visit, I always try to incorporate local culture into the Vietnamese ao dai."

For example, when performing in Japan, I combined brocade ao dai with cherry blossoms, or during the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Japan, I created the collection " Lotus Petals and the Sun ," using the five-panel ao dai silhouette as a bridge for cultural exchange between the two cultures," designer Viet Hung revealed.

Each spring, Vietnamese designer Viet Hung chooses a new way to tell a story through his ao dai (traditional Vietnamese dress). This year, he introduced nearly 20 new collections. Among them is a collection inspired by the Year of the Horse, the zodiac animal of the year – a symbol of aspiration, breakthrough, economic prosperity, and the spirit of reaching for greater heights.

He explained that the image of a horse flying above the clouds, rendered on Thai Tuan silk, was created using a combination of printing and hand-painting techniques, along with handcrafted beadwork. The traditional ao dai silhouette was preserved, while the sleeves were stylized to create a visual effect during the performance.

Viet Hung experimented with double-sided sewing techniques for this collection. This means a design can be reversed into two different patterns: one side featuring a horse motif, the other a plum blossom or cherry blossom pattern. He said the designs incorporate techniques such as crocheting, using jute cord for decorative purposes, and incorporating chiffon into the garments to create a flowing, airy feel.

The collection "On the Wharf, Under the Boat" recreates the atmosphere of the Spring Flower Market , associated with the Tau Hu Canal and Binh Dong Wharf (Ho Chi Minh City). The bustling end-of-year trading scene and river life are also depicted on the ao dai (traditional Vietnamese dress). He has been associated with this festival for many years.

The collections are inspired by The Tale of Kieu , and traditional cultural elements, paintings, and poetry are skillfully incorporated by the designer to create a contemporary language.

Accompanying major festivals

Vietnamese designer Viet Hung is always involved in major events in Ho Chi Minh City as a costume designer. For example, he has been involved since the early days of the Ho Chi Minh City Ao Dai Festival , which is now in its 11th year.

Previously, he designed all the traditional Vietnamese ao dai costumes worn during the two most recent seasons of the Ho Chi Minh City River Festival .

Vietnamese designer Viet Hung has been and continues his persistent journey of promoting Vietnamese ao dai (traditional dress) internationally with a sense of national pride.
