In recent days, a Facebook account named Yen Nguyen Bruno Lerulli posted a post on social media about a trip to Ha Long and being scammed out of money for a hotel reservation.
This account said that he is an overseas Vietnamese in the US and his family of 5 people need to rent a 4-bedroom apartment in Ha Long City, Quang Ninh for 2 nights.
After booking an apartment on the Booking website for more than 236 USD, Yen Nguyen Bruno Lerulli's family traveled from Hanoi to Ha Long but could not find the apartment's address.
After contacting the rental agency again, she received the answer that the room had been full for several weeks. This person suggested changing to another apartment with only 2 bedrooms, but she did not agree.
After negotiating but not reaching a consensus, the landlord wanted Ms. Yen Nguyen Bruno Lerulli to cancel her apartment reservation request. However, if she canceled the request herself, she would lose the deposit she had made.
Too tired, Ms. Yen Nguyen Bruno Lerulli searched for another apartment on the Airbnb application and paid 2 days' rent of more than 167 USD but still encountered the same situation when she could not find the apartment address.
Contacting by phone, Ms. Yen Nguyen Bruno Lerulli also received the answer that there were no rooms available and asked her to cancel the reservation herself. This person then came to the place to transfer the amount of more than 167 USD to Ms. Yen Nguyen Bruno Lerulli's family and suggested that she rent at Sapphire apartment (Hong Gai ward, Ha Long city).
Here, after deciding to rent a 3-bedroom apartment with sea view for 6.3 million VND for 3 days, Yen Nguyen Bruno Lerulli's family moved their belongings in to rest after nearly 10 hours of being lost in Ha Long.
However, according to the overseas Vietnamese woman, when she opened the door, the apartment smelled fishy and the floor and bedding had not been changed after the previous customer checked out.
Complaining about the apartment not being as advertised, the landlord said it was the fishy smell of sea water and then did not answer the phone after receiving the apartment rent from Ms. Yen Nguyen Bruno Lerulli.
“I hope that when people travel to Ha Long, they will not encounter the same situation as my family, and will not be scammed when renting a room here,” Yen Nguyen Bruno Lerulli shared in the post.
Regarding the above issue, a representative of the Ha Long City Party Committee said that the local government has received the information and has a plan to check the situation of renting rooms in apartment buildings in the city.
A person working in the booking field said that the situation like the family of Yen Nguyen Bruno Lerulli encountered is common for foreign tourists when coming to Ha Long. Because many hotels and motels are not interested in customers booking rooms through booking applications instead of contacting directly.
In addition, many hotels and motels in Ha Long City currently rarely check booking applications, focusing on welcoming tourists who come directly to ask and book rooms through intermediaries.
