The seminar attracted the participation of many officials, former diplomats, veterans, scholars, students from both countries, representatives of the Vietnamese-American community, and many international friends who supported the anti-war movement in the past.
The Vietnamese delegation attending the discussion included Vietnamese Ambassador to the US Nguyen Quoc Dung, Ambassador - Head of the Vietnamese Mission to the United Nations Dang Hoang Giang and former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Head of the Vietnamese Mission to the United Nations Dang Dinh Quy. The seminar included three in-depth discussion sessions with the following topics: “Vietnam-US Relations: From Reconciliation to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership”, “The Future of the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership” and “A Reconciliation Model for the World”. Speakers from many different fields and generations shared rich perspectives and experiences and were consistent in their assessment: After 50 years of ending the war and 30 years of normalization, Vietnam-US relations have made great strides, meeting the common interests of the people of the two countries, while actively contributing to peace, stability and development of the Asia-Pacific region and the world.
Many outstanding achievements in bilateral cooperation have been recorded, especially in the fields of overcoming the consequences of war, economic cooperation, education, culture and people-to-people exchange. These results are vivid evidence of the ability to overcome the past and move towards the future.
Delegates also emphasized two core factors contributing to the success of the normalization process and the development of Vietnam-US relations, which are “reconciliation” and “trust building”. In addition to the political determination and continuous efforts of the two governments, the role of veterans, people’s organizations, the overseas Vietnamese community, especially Vietnamese Americans, is also considered an important factor in healing the past and bridging the future.
A highlight of the discussion was the discussion, analysis and appreciation of General Secretary To Lam's message on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of national reunification. The message clearly demonstrated the consistent, humane and tolerant viewpoint and policy of the Party and State of Vietnam: not forgetting the past, but willing to put it aside to look to the future together, for the prosperity of the nation and the long-term interests of the Vietnam-US relationship.
