On June 10, in response to a reporter's question asking for comment on the statement of the Spokesperson of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on June 6 regarding the activities of the Chinese survey ship group Xiangyanghong 10, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pham Thu Hang affirmed that Vietnam has sufficient legal basis and historical evidence to affirm its sovereignty over the Truong Sa and Hoang Sa archipelagos.
"The legal status of the Truong Sa archipelago as well as its entities have been clearly defined under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), Ms. Hang said.
Sovereignty, sovereign rights and jurisdiction over a country's maritime zones established in accordance with UNCLOS 1982 as well as the legitimate and legal rights and interests of coastal countries, including Vietnam, must be respected.
"This demonstrates the sense of responsibility, constructiveness and practical contribution of the countries involved to peace , stability, cooperation and rule of law in the region, including the East Sea region," the Foreign Ministry Spokesperson emphasized.
Previously, from May 7, the Chinese survey ship Huong Duong Hong 10 along with a number of coast guard and fishing boats violated Vietnam's exclusive economic zone.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Vietnamese authorities have communicated many times with the Chinese side and implemented measures in accordance with international law and Vietnamese law to ensure Vietnam's legitimate rights and interests.
