According to the announcement on the morning of May 13 by the Ministry of Education and Training, the two students who won gold medals were Tran Trung Kien (Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted) and Nguyen Ngo Duc (Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted, Nghe An).

Silver medals went to Dinh Trong An (High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences, University of Natural Sciences) and Tran Hoang Nam (Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted).

Of the four students, only Hoang Nam is in grade 11, the rest are in grade 12.

This year, the Vietnamese delegation had fewer contestants than last year (10 students), but the number of gold medals increased by one.

The Ministry of Education and Training said the Mendeleev International Chemistry Olympiad is one of the most prestigious and challenging academic exams, often dubbed "the most difficult chemistry exam on the planet".

The Mendeleev International Chemistry Olympiad was first held in 1967 and was organized by the Ministry of Education of the Soviet Union. Since 2004, the competition has been open to students from outside the country. Currently, the competition is organized by the Faculty of Chemistry, Lomonosov Moscow State University and the Melnichenkoko Foundation.

Not only testing professional capacity, the organizing committee also aims to discover and nurture young scientific talents and enhance exchange and cooperation between countries.

This year’s exam took place from May 5 to 12 in Brazil, attracting more than 190 candidates from 40 countries and territories. They had to pass two theoretical rounds and one practical round over three days. The test time was 5 hours per round.

The Organizing Committee officially awarded prizes to 60% of the participating contestants, with the ratio of gold, silver, and bronze medals being 1:2:3.

This is the second year Vietnam has participated in this competition. Last year, the Vietnamese team had 10 students, won one gold, five silvers and four bronzes; ranked third overall, after China and Russia.
