On January 13th, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Phung Duc Tien met and worked with a delegation from the US Embassy regarding the US-Vietnam Aquaculture Value Chain Partnership Project.
According to information presented at the meeting, the project has a total budget of over $15.2 million, to be implemented over 5 years, aiming to increase tilapia production to 1.21 million tons, with an estimated total sales value of approximately $1.25 billion. The project is expected to start in March 2026, focusing on basic research, improving the quality of broodstock, and supporting hatcheries; from October 2026 onwards, it will expand to provide technical support, training, capacity building, and financial assistance to farmers.
The project, implemented in the Red River Delta and Mekong Delta regions, is expected to benefit more than 24,000 people, including households, farms, processing plants, management agencies, and industry associations. One of the project's key solutions is the use of high-quality imported soybeans as aquaculture feed to improve the productivity and quality of tilapia.
Evaluating the project, Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien stated that it is a "right and appropriate" project, and suggested further research to expand the development of striped tilapia and red tilapia in the central and southern regions to take advantage of geographical advantages.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment is committed to coordinating efforts to remove related administrative procedures, striving to complete them before May 2026, creating favorable conditions for the project's effective implementation and maximizing Vietnam's tilapia export potential.
