At the invitation of the Governments of New Zealand and Australia, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha paid official visits to New Zealand and Australia from November 20-25, 2025.
The delegation included leaders of the ministries of: Foreign Affairs, Government Office , Finance, Education and Training, Agriculture and Environment, Science and Technology.
In New Zealand, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha paid a courtesy call to Speaker of the National Assembly Gerry Brownlee; held talks with Deputy Prime Minister David Seymour; had meetings with Minister for Trade, Investment and Agriculture Nicola Grigg and Minister for Environment Penny Simmons; and visited the New Zealand Institute of Earth Sciences.
In Australia, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha had meetings and contacts with President of the Senate Sue Lines; Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Richard Marles; Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and Chair of the Australia-Vietnam Parliamentary Friendship Group Sharon Claydon; worked with Minister for Natural Resources Madeleine King, Minister for Environment and Water Resources Murray Watt, Joint Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Matt Thistlethwaite, and Joint Minister for Energy and Climate Change Josh Wilson.
Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha worked with Australian Chief Scientist Tony Haymet and Director of the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR); visited the Australian National University (ANU); attended and spoke at the opening ceremony of the Vietnam Policy Center at ANU; attended and spoke at the Vietnam-Australia Science and Technology Forum and launched the VietNEST online Vietnamese language learning platform; and received a number of businesses in the fields of agriculture and minerals.

During the talks with the leaders of the two countries, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha informed about the serious damage caused by storms and floods in Vietnam and hoped to continue to receive cooperation and support from New Zealand and Australia in overcoming the consequences of natural disasters in particular as well as strengthening cooperation in the fields of environment and climate change. The leaders of New Zealand and Australia sent their condolences and deepest sympathies for the great damage and loss of life and property caused by storms and floods in the central provinces of Vietnam.
Expressing its desire to share with the Vietnamese government and people during this difficult time, the New Zealand Government announced to support Vietnam with 3 million NZD (1.7 million USD) and the Australian Government announced to support a total of 3.8 million AUD (2.46 million USD) to overcome the consequences of storms and floods.
The leaders of New Zealand and Australia emphasized the significance of the high-level visit by the Vietnamese Government delegation, which took place at a time when the relationship between the two countries has seen very positive developments, contributing to maintaining high-level contacts and enhancing substantive cooperation, in line with the framework of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries.
Senior leaders of Australia and New Zealand highly appreciated the friendly and cooperative relations with Vietnam, emphasizing that upgrading the relationship to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Vietnam in March 2024 and February 2025, respectively, is a historic step forward. Both sides were pleased with the timely development and implementation of Action Programs to implement the Vietnam-Australia and Vietnam-New Zealand Comprehensive Strategic Partnerships, with specific and practical cooperation contents.
The two sides agreed to actively coordinate to effectively implement high-level agreements, strengthen political relations through exchanges of high-level delegations and at all levels, and take specific measures to further enhance the effectiveness of cooperation in the fields of economics, investment, trade, defense, security, tourism, culture, education and training, etc., and promote cooperation between people's organizations and businesses of the two countries.
Agreeing that economic and trade cooperation still has much potential, the two sides emphasized the need for closer economic ties and more effective trade and investment cooperation; agreed to further promote the connection between the two economies, promote the signing of economic, trade and investment cooperation agreements, facilitate market opening for each other's agricultural products, aiming to diversify the supply chain, and strive to achieve higher trade and investment turnover targets.
Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha welcomed businesses from both sides to strengthen connections, affirming that he would create a favorable investment environment for New Zealand and Australian businesses to invest and do business in Vietnam, especially high-quality projects using modern technology.
Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha shared Vietnam's development orientations in the new era and priority projects in strategic infrastructure sectors, including railways, airports, energy, digital transformation, etc. Australian leaders said that Australian investment funds are increasingly interested in investment opportunities in Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, and are planning to expand operations in Vietnam to take advantage of new cooperation opportunities.

Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha highly appreciated the role of the Governments of New Zealand and Australia in promoting global joint efforts on environmental protection and climate change response; thanked both countries for their meaningful support through many ODA projects in this field, including programs on natural disaster response and mitigation, sustainable agricultural development, and climate change adaptation in the Mekong Delta region.
The two sides agreed to create further breakthroughs in science-technology cooperation, digital transformation, green transformation, agriculture and climate change response; increase exchanges and share experiences in building programs and action plans to achieve emission reduction targets, as well as experience in developing carbon credit markets.
Leaders of New Zealand and Australia pledged to continue providing financial, technological and intellectual support to Vietnam to fulfill its international commitments on climate, implement energy transition and develop renewable energy, and exploit minerals with clean and environmentally friendly technology.
Appreciating the importance of people-to-people exchanges in strengthening bilateral relations, the leaders agreed to further promote ties between the two peoples through cooperation in education and training, human resource development, labor, and tourism; promote airlines of the two countries to open direct flights, encourage localities of the two countries to proactively establish friendly relations, and major universities of the two countries to strengthen connections.
Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha suggested that New Zealand and Australia continue to increase the number of scholarships for Vietnamese students, while creating conditions for the growing Vietnamese community to live, study and work in each country./.
