Vietnam participates in International Conference on Aquaculture

On November 27-28, in Chiang Mai province, about 700km north of Bangkok, Thailand, the 2nd International Conference on Innovation in Aquaculture 2025 took place with the theme "Innovation in aquaculture for a sustainable and adaptive future".

Under the auspices of the Embassy of Vietnam in Thailand, the Vietnam Office of Science and Technology in Thailand, in collaboration with Chiang Mai University, Thailand and Gorgan University of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences, Iran, co-organized the Workshop in both in-person and online formats.

Attending the workshop were Vietnamese Ambassador to Thailand Pham Viet Hung; Counselor, Head of the Vietnam Science and Technology Office in Thailand Tran Thi Hue; and many scientists, experts and scholars in the aquaculture industry from many countries.

At this conference, Vietnam had the participation of more than 10 scientists from the Aquaculture Research Institute I, such as Dr. Nguyen Huu Nghia, Vo Van Binh, Pham Thai Giang... Also attending were Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thi Nang Thu - Vietnam Academy of Agriculture; Dr. Tran Quang Hung - University of South Bohemia, Czech Republic.

In his speech on the theme “Promoting cooperation in science, technology and innovation between Vietnam and Thailand”, Ambassador Pham Viet Hung emphasized that Chiang Mai province has long been known as an important economic , cultural and educational center in northern Thailand, where a long-standing historical tradition and a strong spirit of innovation converge.

The Ambassador said that Chiang Mai University is not only one of the most prestigious universities in Thailand but also an active academic partner of many Vietnamese educational institutions and localities.

Ambassador Pham Viet Hung said that on May 16, Vietnam and Thailand upgraded their relationship to the highest level of Comprehensive Strategic Partnership; emphasizing that this is an important step forward, a strong political commitment of the two countries to promoting deeper cooperation in all fields.

Ambassador Pham Viet Hung stated that Vietnam and Thailand are both in Southeast Asia, have many geographical similarities, both have long coastlines and many freshwater rivers and lakes, so both have strengths in the fisheries industry.

Therefore, the Ambassador believes that the workshop is a good opportunity for scientists from Vietnam, Thailand and other countries to exchange and share experiences and academics, promote mutual understanding, thereby enhancing substantive and mutually beneficial cooperation for sustainable development and common prosperity.

On behalf of the President of Chiang Mai University, Assistant Professor Dr. Choncharoen Sawangrat, Assistant President, emphasized that the theme of this conference reflects a shared vision of building sustainable, efficient and climate-resilient food systems.

According to Mr. Choncharoen Sawangrat, aquaculture plays a vital role in ensuring food security, supporting livelihoods and protecting the environment. As the world faces challenges such as climate change, limited resources and population growth, innovation and collaboration are needed to make the aquaculture sector more resilient and responsible.

On November 28, delegates attended and listened to dozens of speakers presenting a number of topics related to agriculture, sustainable aquaculture, recirculating aquaculture... under the coordination of a number of scientists, including Associate Professor, Dr. Doan Van Hien, currently working at Chiang Mai University.

On the afternoon of November 28, delegates listened to a number of live presentations by Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thi Nang Thu - Vietnam Academy of Agriculture with the topic "Potential of using earthworms as food for shrimp and humans" and an online presentation by Dr. Tran Quang Hung - University of South Bohemia, Czech Republic with the topic "Composition and diversity in the intestinal tract of carp in the Biofloc system".

This conference highlights advances in the aquaculture industry, as well as solutions that contribute to addressing global challenges in food security, climate and health.

At the workshop, delegates presented and discussed many issues, such as innovation in aquaculture nutrition and feed; aquatic animal health and disease prevention and control; improved genetic, reproductive and breeding technologies; sustainable and smart aquaculture systems; emerging aquaculture models; the industry's resilience to environmental impacts, etc.

At the workshop, representatives from the Faculty of Agriculture, Chiang Mai University, highlighted the challenges facing the aquaculture industry; emphasizing the urgent need for innovative aquaculture methods that not only increase productivity but also protect and restore the sustainability of aquatic resources and ecosystems. The Faculty of Agriculture, Chiang Mai University is promoting research and collaborative networks on smart agriculture towards sustainable development, contributing to improving people's livelihoods.

Chiang Mai University and its partners are working to promote research to support Thailand’s Bio-Circular-Green Economy (BCG) and contribute to the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Chiang Mai University hopes that the conference will inspire creativity, promote collaboration and bring about innovations that bring practical benefits.

This workshop is an opportunity for delegates to share knowledge, build cross-sectoral partnerships and explore climate change response strategies to build aquaculture systems that are resilient and adaptable to future uncertainties.
