On November 11, the Central Lung Hospital announced that in one day, the hospital coordinated with experts and hospitals: National Organ Transplant Coordination Center, Hospital E, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital - National University, 108 Central Military Hospital, Cho Ray Hospital, Ba Ria General Hospital... to successfully perform 2 lung transplants for 2 patients.

Dr. Dinh Van Luong - Director of the Central Lung Hospital said this is the first time in Vietnam that two lung transplants have been successfully performed in one day.

All lung transplants performed by the Central Lung Hospital are successful at the highest level according to the standards of the UCSF Lung Transplant Center - University of California, San Francisco, the most prestigious Medical Center in the United States.

The success of these two transplants has raised the total number of successful lung transplants of the Hospital to 9, putting Vietnam on the list of major Lung Transplant Centers in the world .

This event contributes to Vietnam's organ transplant achievements, is a breakthrough in the country's medicine, affirming the synchronous capacity of the Central Lung Hospital and leading hospitals in the country.

On the afternoon of November 9, the lung organ from the 55-year-old male soldier donor was transplanted into the 48-year-old female patient under the coordination of dozens of experts, surgeons and medical staff. The surgery lasted more than 8 hours.

The female patient has a history of type 2 diabetes, treated according to a specialized regimen. The patient was discovered to have lung damage since 2023, with multiple bronchiectasis in both lungs and recurrent pneumothorax. The patient underwent pleurodesis in July 2024 at the Central Lung Hospital and was placed on the transplant waiting list at the Hospital's Lung Transplant Center from that time. The patient's lung function has declined and only a lung transplant can give the patient a chance to continue living.

After the lung transplant, the patient is receiving post-operative care at the Lung Transplant Center. The patient has had the endotracheal tube removed and is breathing on his own with the new lung.

Also on November 9, the Hospital continued to receive lung organs transported from Ho Chi Minh City (Ba Ria General Hospital) by air to Hanoi (Central Lung Hospital). This is the second time that a lung organ from a donor has been coordinated, transported, and strictly preserved "from South to North" to be transplanted on the night of November 9 at the Central Lung Hospital - the next "cross-Vietnam" lung transplant.

After 6 hours of traveling, at exactly 9:00 p.m. on November 9, the lung organ from the 32-year-old male donor was transplanted to the 48-year-old male patient under the continuous efforts of the surgical team, anesthesia, resuscitation, and intensive care to save the patient's life. The surgery lasted for 9 hours until dawn the next day (November 10).

The lungs were transplanted to a male patient with a history of COPD for many years and lung cysts. The patient was placed on the Lung Transplant Center's transplant waiting list in 2022. The patient's health condition was complicated, with many dangerous underlying diseases. Since March 2023, the patient had invasive pulmonary fungus, adrenal insufficiency, vertebral collapse with spinal cement injection, and the patient had high blood pressure and was taking regular medication. In February 2024, the patient was again diagnosed with diabetes. The patient had been on oxygen at home for the past 2 years, with a high mortality rate.

After the transplant, the patient is receiving post-operative care and monitoring at the Lung Transplant Center. Currently, the patient's health is progressing favorably.

The Director of the Central Lung Hospital said that both lung transplant patients were managed and monitored at the Central Lung Hospital before and had been waiting for lung transplants for a long time. As soon as information from the brain-dead organ donor was received, the Central Lung Hospital immediately organized a consultation, quickly coordinated, and mobilized the combined strength of leading experts from all fields to participate in the lung transplants.

The hospital is in the process of building a Regional Lung Transplant Center, not only to perform lung transplants for Vietnamese people and other countries in the region, but also to continue to transfer, train, and improve lung transplant techniques to the highest level like developed countries, and to be recognized in the list of lung transplant systems in the world./.
