This is the second route of Vietnam Airlines connecting Vietnam and India, after the capital New Delhi.
Mr. Hoang Tung, Consul General of Vietnam in Mumbai, Ms. Tran Phuong Anh, Vice Consul of Vietnam in Mumbai, along with representatives of Vietnam Airlines and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Airport attended the Lamp Lighting Ceremony - a solemn Indian ritual in the opening events and performed the inaugural ceremony of this flight. Passengers were presented with flowers and took souvenir photos with the crew as well as representatives of the units present at the ceremony.
Vietnam Airlines Deputy General Director Trinh Ngoc Thanh said: “With the new route connecting to Mumbai, the most important financial, commercial and cultural center in India, Vietnam Airlines demonstrates its commitment to continuously expanding and developing its flight network, providing passengers with many flexible options for both business and leisure travel. We hope that the routes connecting the two countries will bring many benefits to the two countries, strengthening bilateral relations and sustainable economic development.”
Previously, the first flight VN973 from Hanoi to Mumbai at 6:20 p.m. carrying 190 passengers landed at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Airport at 9:22 p.m. (local time) the same day. At the airport, after landing, passengers were warmly welcomed by representatives of Vietnam Airlines with flowers and souvenirs.
Vietnam Airlines will operate flights to Mumbai with a frequency of 4 flights per week from Hanoi on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays and 3 flights per week from Ho Chi Minh City on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Previously, the airline operated direct flights connecting Vietnam and the capital New Delhi from June 2022 with a frequency of 3 flights per week from Hanoi on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays; 2 flights per week from Ho Chi Minh City on Thursdays and Saturdays. Flights are operated with Airbus A321 aircraft.
The total number of visitors between India and Vietnam in 2019 (before the pandemic) reached 319,000, an increase of 35% over the same period last year. India is one of Vietnam's leading trade partners, while Vietnam is also India's 15th largest trade partner and 4th among Southeast Asian countries. Vietnam Airlines' new route will make an important contribution to enhancing trade, cultural and social connections between the two countries.
