The rankings are based on monitoring and evaluating 320 airlines, reflecting the extent to which they meet international safety standards and demonstrating the sustained improvement of national airlines over the years.
AirlineRatings is a leading global organization in the field of aviation safety and quality assessment, referenced by airlines and regulatory bodies worldwide. In the Top 25 in 2026, Vietnam Airlines stands alongside many leading airlines worldwide such as Emirates, Etihad, Singapore Airlines, All Nippon Airways, etc.
Most of AirlineRatings' stringent evaluation criteria have remained consistent over the years, including incident rate per flight, crew age, serious incidents, pilot training, and safety assessments. This year, AirlineRatings placed a greater emphasis on turbulence prevention, as this remains the leading cause of in-flight injuries.
Vietnam Airlines currently uses advanced weather display, forecasting, and assessment software to simultaneously evaluate multiple meteorological factors combined with topographical characteristics. This allows them to develop operational plans and provide early warnings to pilots, minimizing the impact of turbulence during flight on passenger safety.
Sharon Petersen, CEO of AirlineRatings, stated that Vietnam Airlines continues to improve its ranking, placing 19th in our 2026 list of the world's safest airlines. This reflects significant and consistent progress across multiple areas, including fleet quality, safety systems, industry evaluation results, a very low incident rate, and operational stability, rather than stemming from a single factor.
"Furthermore, Vietnam's aviation safety oversight is constantly being strengthened, as demonstrated by assessments from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), benefiting not only Vietnamese airlines but also other airlines operating flights to and from Vietnam," Sharon Petersen assessed.
Affirming that building and developing a safety culture is the foundation for the sustainable development of the aviation industry, Mr. Dinh Van Tuan, Deputy General Director of Vietnam Airlines, stated that Vietnam Airlines regularly organizes risk assessment meetings, invests in technology, improves the quality of human resource training, and perfects operational procedures according to international standards.
“Vietnam Airlines’ continued position in the Top 25 safest traditional airlines in the world in 2026 demonstrates the international capabilities of Vietnamese aviation. With a foundation of safety, quality, and global standard governance, Vietnam Airlines continuously connects Vietnam with the world, affirming the image of a safe, reliable, and integrated country,” Mr. Tuan emphasized.
Vietnam Airlines was the first airline in Vietnam to be awarded the IOSA operational safety certification by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and has continuously maintained this certification since 2006. The safety management system, developed by the airline since 2007, meets the highest international safety standards and has been approved by the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam as a model for other domestic airlines to develop and improve their safety documentation.
In 2023, IATA selected Vietnam Airlines to host the World Safety and Operations Conference, demonstrating the influence and position of the national airline as well as the Vietnamese aviation industry in the global aviation market.
