Maintain the role of a core enterprise in the maritime sector

Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc congratulated and commended the efforts and outstanding achievements of Vietnam National Shipping Lines (VIMC) over the past 30 years.

He emphasized that the Second Class Labor Medal is a worthy recognition by the Party and State for VIMC's important contributions in the fields of maritime and logistics.

Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc asked VIMC to continue promoting its tradition, constantly innovate and implement well the orientations of the Party and State.

According to the Deputy Prime Minister, VIMC has overcome many difficulties to become one of the leading enterprises, owning a modern seaport system, a global shipping fleet, and playing a pioneering role in international logistics services.

VIMC not only contributes to economic development but also enhances Vietnam's position on the world trade map.

The Deputy Prime Minister said that today's achievements come from the will, spirit of overcoming difficulties and the constant creative efforts of the leadership, cadres, officers and crew members of VIMC.

He suggested that businesses continue to innovate and implement major policies of the Party and State, especially in the context of digital transformation and green transformation that are strongly impacting all industries.

The government targets 8% GDP growth by 2025 and double digits in the following years. In the strategy for sustainable marine economic development, the maritime industry is the spearhead and plays a key role.

Resolution 57-NQ/TW on scientific and technological breakthroughs, innovation and digital transformation also identifies this as a strategic driving force to enhance national competitiveness.

The Deputy Prime Minister also noted major challenges from international fluctuations, transportation costs, supply chain disruptions, climate change, etc.

In that context, VIMC needs to promote the modernization of its fleet and seaport system, develop key deep-water ports, expand its large-tonnage fleet, focus on container transport, and at the same time promote digitalization and reduce logistics costs.

“Key projects such as deep-water ports and international transit ports need to be implemented resolutely, ensuring progress and quality,” the Deputy Prime Minister emphasized.

He also suggested that VIMC complete a modern, transparent, effective, and globally competitive governance model.

Regarding human resources, the Deputy Prime Minister requested VIMC to prioritize the development of high-quality human resources with professional expertise and modern management skills, expand the market, participate deeply in the global maritime transport chain, affirm the role of a core State-owned enterprise and aim to become the leading maritime corporation in the region.

Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc awarded the Second Class Labor Medal to Vietnam National Shipping Lines and Certificates of Merit from the Prime Minister to collectives and individuals with outstanding achievements in contributing to the cause of building socialism and defending the Fatherland.

Accepting the Deputy Prime Minister's direction, Chairman of the Board of Directors of VIMC Le Anh Son affirmed that the Corporation always considers policies and orientations as a compass to continue to innovate, improve competitiveness and contribute to the country's development.

Rise strong after difficulties

VIMC Chairman of the Board of Directors Le Anh Son spoke at the event.

At the event, Mr. Le Anh Son emotionally reviewed the 30-year development journey of VIMC - from the difficult years to affirming its current position.

There was a time when the "ship" VIMC seemed to be sinking due to heavy debt and shaky confidence.

In the early days of its establishment under the name Vinalines, the company owned an old fleet, outdated facilities, only 6,900m of wharf, and no dedicated port.

By 2010, Vinalines reached its peak with 159 ships, with a total tonnage of nearly 3.5 million DWT, accounting for 45% of the national fleet. However, the global economic crisis in 2008 caused the company to struggle. In 2013, accumulated losses exceeded VND23,000 billion, and liabilities reached VND66,000 billion.

“It was in that dark moment that the people of VIMC did not give up. With the spirit of the seafaring profession and national pride, we overcame the storm to rise strongly,” said Mr. Son.

The Corporation has comprehensively restructured, focusing on three core areas: port operations, shipping and maritime services. The enterprise boldly streamlined its apparatus, eliminated inefficient units, and innovated its management model, thereby gradually overcoming losses.

VIMC's equity has recovered spectacularly, from negative VND7,000 billion to nearly VND17,000 billion. The enterprise has now become a public company, with a capitalization value of over VND100,000 billion, managing more than 16 key seaports, accounting for nearly 30% of the market share of goods passing through Vietnam's seaports, and owning a fleet of increasingly powerful shipping vessels.

VIMC is focusing on investing in strategic deep-water ports such as Cai Mep – Thi Vai, Lach Huyen and soon Can Gio international transit port.

The company aims to improve port efficiency, expand logistics services, invest in an environmentally friendly fleet, and apply artificial intelligence (AI) and big data in supply chain operations and management.

In addition, VIMC is developing modern logistics centers in Hai Phong, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City, gradually realizing the goal of becoming the leading maritime corporation in the country and the region.
