Ho Chi Minh City PhoGPT has a model similar to ChatGPT, trained with Vietnamese data to create the ability to understand and write in a natural style, launched on December 5.
The project was announced at Artificial Intelligence Day 2023 with the theme "AI - Redesigning Reality". The program is organized annually by VinAI (under Vingroup) and New Turning Institute; the accompanying units are the Ministry of Science and Technology of Vietnam, the National Innovation Center (NIC).
In its fifth year, the program lasted for two days, December 5-6. On the first day, VinAI announced an open source research project on a large language model specifically for Vietnamese, PhoGPT. According to the unit's representative, the project aims to develop models similar to ChatGPT for Vietnamese and Vietnamese culture. PhoGPT is capable of understanding and writing Vietnamese. The model is also trained from scratch with a Vietnamese dataset, independent of other models in the world .
"PhoGPT goes hand in hand with the world's large open source language model trend. Comparing the PhoGPT-7B5-Instruct version, the closed source ChatGPT (GPT-3.5-turbo) and other open source models, PhoGPT ranks second only to ChatGPT in most evaluation criteria," said a representative of the project development team.
According to VinAI's leader, the PhoGPT development team is continuing to improve the model and will expand the project to other languages. The team is targeting languages in the Southeast Asian region.

In addition to the new project launch, there were four main discussion sessions throughout the two days, revolving around the topics: The future of large language models (LLMs); Shaping the vision of the future of artificial intelligence; The global impact of generative artificial intelligence GenAI and the potential of GenAI in the Southeast Asian economy .
Among them, Generative AI - GenAI is a hot topic, attracting attention due to its practicality and functionality. Participating in the discussion are more than 30 experts including professors and leading scientists in the field of global artificial intelligence, more than 100 business representatives and 1,500 guests from the fields of technology, production and manufacturing domestically and internationally. In addition to attending four discussion sessions, attendees also have the opportunity to experience features and products applying artificial intelligence at the exhibition booth.
Dr. Bui Hai Hung, General Director of VinAI, said that AI Day 2023 is the largest artificial intelligence event that the unit has co-organized. This year, the program focuses on GenAI, hoping to create a bridge between Vietnamese intelligence and future advances. "We also aim to develop the Vietnamese AI community globally," Mr. Hung emphasized.
Citing Precedence Research data, he said that spending on AI hardware is increasing rapidly, from 43 billion USD in 2021 to about 248 billion USD in 2030. In this context, VinAI invests in optimizing AI algorithms, helping to minimize waste. Optimized AI models significantly reduce hardware investment costs and cloud computing operations; take up less memory space, reduce power consumption, thereby reducing emissions to the environment.
