Honoring breakthrough achievements in HPV vaccine

Scientists won the VinFuture 2025 Prize.
The foundational research on the HPV capsid protein conducted by Dr. Lowy and Dr. Schiller has led to the development of highly effective HPV vaccines, which have prevented millions of cases of cervical cancer, especially in developing countries.
Dr. Kreimer’s single-dose vaccination protocol, recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), has significantly expanded access to vaccines. Gillison and Dr. Kreimer’s research has also established a link between HPV and head and neck cancer. Dr. Lowy says their vaccine could save tens of thousands of lives each year, many of them women from poor countries.
Three special prizes promote scientific equality
In addition to the Main Prize, VinFuture 2025 also awards three Special Prizes, each worth 500,000 USD.
The Special Prize for Women Scientists was awarded to Professor Mary-Claire King (USA) for her discovery of the BRCA1 gene linked to the risk of breast and ovarian cancer. The location of the BRCA1 gene in 1990 was considered a historic milestone, changing approaches to prevention and treatment worldwide.
The Special Prize for Scientists from Developing Countries honored Prof. María Esperanza Martínez-Romero (Mexico) for her advances in microbial ecology and symbiotic nitrogen fixation in tropical ecosystems. Her work opens up new research directions on plant-bacteria symbiosis, with far-reaching implications for sustainable agriculture in resource-limited contexts.
The Special Prize for Emerging Fields recognizes five scientists (Prof. Venkatesan Sundaresan, Prof. Raphaël Mercier, Dr. Emmanuel Guiderdoni, Dr. Imtiyaz Khanday and Dr. Delphine Mieulet) for their innovations in developing self-propagating hybrid crops. This work produces rice seeds with superior characteristics identical to the parent plant through self-pollination, helping to improve yields and promote sustainable food security.
VinFuture - A trusted destination for global knowledge
In 2025, the VinFuture Prize attracted 1,705 nominations, nearly three times more than the first season.
Professor Richard Friend, Chairman of the VinFuture Prize Council, emphasized that this year's honored works demonstrate the power of science when guided by compassion and the spirit of cross-border cooperation. He affirmed that when knowledge serves humanity, it not only expands our understanding of the world, but also contributes to protecting and nurturing life.
Chairman of the Vietnamese National Assembly Tran Thanh Man affirmed that the theme “Strengthening Together - Prospering Together” is a strong global call for development, in the spirit of solidarity, progress and sharing. Vietnam wishes to work with the world's scientific community to promote cooperation in researching common issues of humanity.
“Vietnam will continue to be a reliable and attractive destination for scientists so that creative values can be shared and spread strongly to the international community,” said Mr. Man.
After 5 seasons, VinFuture has become one of the world's most prestigious science and technology awards, attracting 6,132 nominations from nearly 110 countries and territories, and has honored 48 outstanding scientists. The VinFuture Science and Technology Award and Week have become a familiar connection platform for global knowledge.
