At 7:45 a.m. on November 14, 2025, Meritorious Artist Nguyen Van Vy - the artist who devoted his life to the saxophone - passed away.

The sad news came as a quiet, low note, but in the hearts of many generations of artists, especially Hanoi artists before and after 1954, the pain and grief rushed back like a lingering, endless trumpet sound.

Meritorious Artist Nguyen Van Vy

Born in 1931, artist Nguyen Van Vy was one of the first musicians to make a unique mark in Hanoi's musical life. Performances at the Opera House, art programs serving the resistance fighters, music nights on the banks of Hoan Kiem Lake... all had the presence of him - the artist with the saxophone shining under the yellow lights of the subsidy period. For his colleagues, his trumpet sound is not only a skillful technique or professional musical level; it is also the breath of Hanoi's soul: delicate, gentle and luxurious.

In the years after 1954, the capital’s musicians always mentioned him as a silent symbol of the profession – an artist who was not noisy, not ostentatious, but whose trumpet “spoke for everything”. When he went to the South, Meritorious Artist Nguyen Van Vy did not seek fame for himself. He chose a path that few people knew about and few people were persistent enough to pursue: teaching, passing on the profession, and sowing the seeds of art.

At Dong Nai Art School, he was an exemplary teacher - simple, dedicated and devoted. His students still remember the long practice sessions, where he patiently adjusted each breath, each hand position, each vibration of the saxophone. The sound of the saxophone was passed on by him not only through technique but also through the heart and personality of an artist who lived fully for his profession. Many generations of young artists in the South today still remember him as the one who "breathed life" into their saxophone - the one who taught them to understand that music is not only for performing but also for sharing, for understanding life and for living more beautifully.

Throughout his career, he lived a gentle life like a fleeting blues song, but left a lasting echo in the hearts of listeners - the kind of echo that only truly talented and kind artists can create.

His passing has shocked and saddened the literary world, his friends and generations of students. A trumpet sound that once sounded sweetly, that once resounded amidst the country’s difficult years, that once guided countless art-loving souls, has now fallen silent.

But in the memories of those who remain, the voice of Meritorious Artist Nguyen Van Vy is still there in every old song, in every stage memory, in every breath of the students who continue to blow into life the trumpet sound that he has cherished for nearly a century.

Farewell to the talented artist.
