Recently, Vinmec Can Tho General Hospital successfully performed anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction surgery on the left knee of a 36-year-old male patient after more than a decade of living with pain.
This special surgery was performed by Professor-Doctor-Doctor Tran Trung Dung, a leading expert in orthopedic trauma and sports medicine in Vietnam, who has directly treated many professional players.
More than 10 years of suffering from pain due to sports injuries
Mr. NMT (36 years old, Can Tho) had injured his left knee while playing soccer more than 10 years ago. Not completely cured, about 2 months ago, his knee joint started to hurt a lot, especially when doing strenuous activities. Mr. T was hospitalized with prolonged pain, loose joints, and difficulty moving.
After examination at Vinmec Can Tho, the doctor determined that the knee joint had completely torn the anterior cruciate ligament, torn medial and lateral meniscus, damaged articular cartilage and grade I osteoarthritis.
Notably, Mr. T has many underlying diseases such as high blood pressure, fatty liver, high liver enzymes, increasing the risk of complications during surgery.
To improve motor function and prevent progressive degeneration, Mr. T was prescribed arthroscopic surgery to reconstruct the anterior cruciate ligament, combined with medial and lateral meniscus excision.
With close coordination between specialties and preoperative medical treatment plan, the surgery was successful, combining preoperative medical treatment and applying modern endoscopic surgery techniques to optimize treatment effectiveness and minimize complications.
The surgery lasted more than 1 hour, performed entirely using minimally invasive endoscopic techniques, helping to preserve maximum healthy tissue and minimize pain for the patient.
After only 1 day, the patient was able to move gently, after 48 hours he was eligible for discharge, the surgical wound was dry, the joint could move from 0-30 degrees and the pain level was very low, no complications were recorded.
Based on his post-operative condition, Mr. T will have regular check-ups and Vinmec doctors will develop a suitable exercise plan. If he complies well, after 6-9 months, he can return to his previous sports activities.
