Electronic trading board for May 21st - Data: VSF
Pressure from leading stocks dragged the VN-Index down sharply.
The stock market closed in a correction on May 21st as selling pressure increased on large-cap stocks, especially in the real estate sector.
At the close of trading, the VN-Index fell 16.34 points, or 0.85%, to 1,896.89 points. Meanwhile, the HNX-Index bucked the trend, rising 3.04 points to 264.37 points, and the UPCoM-Index increased 0.52 points to 125.72 points. The VN30-Index also saw a slight decrease of 1.43 points to 2,027.51 points.
Liquidity on the HoSE reached nearly 21,700 billion VND, equivalent to more than 738 million shares changing hands. Market breadth slightly leaned towards positive with 320 gainers, 303 losers, 902 unchanged, 19 hitting the ceiling price, and 13 hitting the floor price.
The negative performance of the VN-Index mainly stemmed from selling pressure on blue-chip stocks. Among them, VIC of Vingroup Group became the stock with the most negative impact on the market, deducting nearly 13 points from the index. This stock fell 3.53% to 218,700 VND per share.
Similarly, stocks within the Vingroup ecosystem such as VHM and VRE also fell into the red. Only VPL maintained its upward momentum, rising 2.07% to 93,500 VND per share.
Besides VIC, many other large-cap stocks also put pressure on the market, such as GAS, GVR, BSR,FPT , CTG, and STB. On the positive side, the group supporting the index included MWG, VPL, LPB, HPG, VCB, and VPB.
Oil and gas, real estate put pressure on PC1, which is bucking the trend.
The banking sector showed mixed performance during the session. Some stocks maintained positive gains, such as VCB, MBB, ACB, VPB, LPB, VIB, andSHB , while CTG, STB, TCB, and BID experienced downward corrections.
The securities sector also showed no consensus, with HCM falling sharply by 2.36%, VND, SSI, VCI, and SHS all declining, while VIX rose by 1.6%.
Meanwhile, the energy and oil and gas sector continued to be the focus of market correction, with most stocks in the industry falling. BSR dropped 3.46%, GAS lost 2.68%, PLX declined 2.05%, while oil and gas service stocks like PVD and PVS also fell by 1.95% and 1.94% respectively.
In the real estate sector, selling pressure spread across many large-cap stocks such as VIC, DXG, VRE, NVL, DIG, and VPI. However, some stocks still traded positively, such as KBC and TCH.
The retail sector was a notable bright spot in the market, with MWG rising nearly 3%, making the most positive contribution to the VN30-Index.
In the industrial sector, PC1 shares of PC1 Group Joint Stock Company attracted attention when they hit the ceiling price of 20,300 VND/share. Trading volume reached over 27 million shares, approximately twice the average of previous sessions.
This positive development comes after a period of sharp decline in PC1's share price due to information related to the company's leadership. In just about a month, the share price had fallen by approximately 40% after rumors surfaced about the prosecution of the company's leaders.
Nevertheless, in the last 3 trading sessions, PC1 has recovered by about 15%, including 2 sessions with maximum price increases and high trading volume.
Conversely, shares of Duc Giang Chemical (DGC) fell 1.64% to VND 48,000 per share, marking the third consecutive day of decline. This development occurred amidst the HoSE's recent adjustment of its decision regarding the transfer of DGC shares from the controlled category to the restricted trading category.
Previously, HoSE decided that DGC shares could only be traded in the afternoon session starting from May 26th. However, shortly afterward, the agency issued an amended document. According to the latest announcement, DGC shares can still be traded throughout the day, but only in even-lot orders using the periodic order matching method.
HoSE stated that the reason DGC was placed under trading restrictions was because the company was more than 45 days late in submitting its audited financial statements for 2025 compared to the stipulated deadline.
