Born into a poor peasant family under French colonial rule, Vo Van Kiet lacked the opportunity to pursue a formal, structured education. However, revolutionary life became his greatest "school." From a young age, he developed the habit of careful observation, listening to diverse perspectives, and questioning every issue. During the difficult and challenging moments of war, or at the complex turning points of history, Vo Van Kiet did not simply act on orders, but always pondered right and wrong, and the long-term consequences of each decision. He confronted practical challenges, including unavoidable mistakes, and viewed them as valuable lessons. This honesty with reality and with himself helped him to quickly become wary of dogmatic, mechanical thinking that was detached from life.

When assuming important leadership positions, especially as the head of Ho Chi Minh City, this spirit of self-learning became even more evident. Vo Van Kiet learned from the vibrant life of the city, from the very specific issues of production, circulation, and people's lives. He proactively listened to the opinions of workers, technical staff, intellectuals, and experts, without distinction between "sides" or "sides," as long as they possessed knowledge and a willingness to contribute.
